Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
« on: June 06, 2005, 11:36:14 AM »
Saw this movie last night and I'm still kind of shaking my head and chuckling.    Did anyone else get a kick out of it?    I grew up loving the Jacques Cousteau specials on TV so seeing this parody of it was funny in an unexpected way.   Plus, the soundtrack was old Bowie I remember listening to in high school, with one great Devo instrumental thrown in.

Its not a laugh out loud, guffaw type movie but there lots of chuckles for anyone who grew up in awe of Cousteau and his adventures on the Calypso.   Keep an open mind and a willingness to entertain a tongue in cheek view of the business side of oceanography.   The cast was terrific - Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett and especially Murray.

I would say though, this is an offbeat movie and there are as many people who hate it as love it.    Pretty subtle humor, liek a mini sub with an dash car stereo.

i was going to post about it the other day.

i rented it.

i started watching it.

i got to about 1/2 hour in, and pulled it out, and drove right to the store to return in.

i have never intentionally not finished watching a movie i started before. it just made no sence, was odder than anything i have seen, and i didn't like it.

yes bill murry is a great actor, and did a great job being weird, but i think it was the rest of the cast that i just couldn't stand. the wilson guy i forget which luke or owen.... it is just uncomfortable to watch that oddball charecter he does in thos emovies (it was the same in the royal tannenbaums, and another movie i saw)
I don't know what to put here yet.

I like Murry and Owens and I enjoyed the movie for what it was.

Would I buy it for my collection?  maybe for $9.99...maybe.

I had a hard time watching it. Fell asleep about midway through. Woke up and it was still going. Watched the ending and returned it.

It's not one I'd buy.

It was ok.   Not as funny as I would have liked considering the situations that were used but...  A movie that stays with you for a few days.

I actually saw it in the theater.  Figured if it was Bill Murray, it was worth paying for.  It wasnt bring-tears-to-my-eyes funny, but I got a good chuckle that lasted most of the way through the movie.  These days, with the "Dumb and Dumber" mentality of comedy movies, it was nice to have some thought put into the jokes.  I loved the radios.

Even if it wasn't funny, the visuals and music and sound are really good.  The ship set is amazing.  And I thought it was funny as hell too.

The scene where Jeff Goldblum is playing poker with the Pirates had me laughing for days. The sequence of events, and how fast and unexpected they were kept me in stiches. Also, I don't like Jeff Goldblum, so it was extra nice for me.

I loved the movie, and thought that Willem Dafoe really stole the show. I also loved the interns.

That whole rescue scene looked like a bunch of kids playing good guys vs bad guys in someone's backyard.   Goldblum got shot in the chest at the poker table and still ran away with the gang when the time came, talking all the way.

DaFoe was hilarious - one of the funniest scenes with him in it got deleted - when they blew the dynamite in the hotel, then everyone came running out, he was the last one out and the back of his wetsuit was on fire, but he was just running along, following everyone else.

I thought it was hilarious that they were a Cousteau-like oceanography film-making team, but part of their uniform was a red stocking cap and a Glock 9 strapped to their legs.

The movie really was sort of like my view of the world when I was 11 or 12.

You have to have watched Jacques Cousteau growing up to get the movie. It is not a low brow comedy. You need to appreciate satire to enjoy it.

But if you can appreciate it then the movie has to be one of the funniest ones I have seen in a long time.
