Sweet action at 25k last night.
« on: June 16, 2005, 09:37:45 AM »
Let me start off by saying I can't remember for the life of me who the other guy was.  All I know is that our CV was being repeatedly bombed from uber high alt and most of our guys were forced to stay on the deck and defend against the incoming fighter attack.

I launch my F4U-D and decided i'm gonna get away from the low level fur ball and get my alt so I could get on these bombers.  I spot a formation of bombers (cant' remember the exact make of the bombers, KI67 maybe.. dunno... short range medium bombers none the less) so I start to move in and take up possition to make a pass on them.  Of course he starts to take evasive action as well.  I shot down one of his bombers clean and then roll out to get set up for another pass.  He starts making agressive moves towards me at this time which impressed me because he didn't dive and run he stayed and fought.

I ended up about 600 clicks off his dead level six.  Just holding the trigger (Takes a lot of MG rounds to kill this guy).  All of the sudden out of no where his drone swings in and collides with me.  All I saw was the underbelly of the drone for a split second then back in the tower.  In my 3 years playing this game I've never been hit by a wayward drone but now that I know it can be done I know I will use that tacktic next time I'm in a hard spot at high alt in bombers.

Just thought I would share the story.  I got it on film too, if i wouldn't have gotten fixated on the target and just taken a second to glance to the right I would have seen this beast bearing down on me.  Taught me a good lesson about SA even when it's a 1 vs. 1 match.

sounds like it was fun....

there are 2 situations you really have to watch out for the drones.

first is in wide manuevers by the lead plane. the drones will "jump" or hop closer to the lead when he starts to level off or something.

the second is when the lead is damaged / killed. if the lead is damaged and spiraling down, the drones will "follow" in that hopping manner. if you outright blow up the lead, the left drone usually "hopps" into the lead position (where it was before blowing up) and if you are in the way of it doing that you will die.

that second one gets me the most because of the high deflection passes i make. come in from 4 o'clock through the fomation, light up the lead plane while it is still under your cowl, and zoom right on down through the formation, pulling up in front for another pass.

quite a few times i have watched the lead go boom, and the drone hop right into my flight line... only for a second, because i am in the tower next >: (
I don't know what to put here yet.

That was a clever bomber pilot.. I'd have never thought of trying that one. :)

Gives me another reason to go for the drones first though :)  I always try to take out the drones first figuring it's slightly harder for the pilot in the lead plane to hit me if I'm not coming straight at him... dunno if it helps but it doesn't hurt. :)
