'05 STi impressions

Just recalled the thread where everybody agreed on how smurfy the car was. Well, my roommate bought one recently, and as of Monday broke through the 1000 mile mark where he deems it's ready to be dogged out. Funny part is though, you're not allowed to test drive it until you've pretty much finished all your paperwork on the car. You know what you're buying and they don't want any miles on the car. He took delivery of his with 3 on it.

First Impression: The front end looks like it should be on Anime robot. Y'all are right, it's not all that pretty in person. Inside the car, you don't really see the hood itself, just the back of the mailbox sized scoop. The seats were comfy, had alot more trunk room than I expected. The interior comfy, not as cramped as it looks from the outside. I'm pretty average, 5'11" 150 lbs, and where the Mitsu Evo VIII seats snugged me in tightly, these felt a bit more loose on the sides. Everything else was run of the mill 4-door sedan stuff.

So off we went to a long, flat, straight road (ty texas!) with no cops (ty middle of the month & not needing to meet goals yet!).

0-60. I left my stomach behind on the first 2 launches, wasn't expecting one of them, and managed to have my head hit the seat hard enough to see that familiar "ow i hit my head" burst of sparks. I still wasn't impressed. I drove a tiny little racing kart with a low 3 second 0-60, this 4.7 was for the birds. wtf was the blurry tunnel vision? wtf was the out of control feeling? simply wasn't there. I was having fun, but not impressed quite yet.

Then a Mustang GT showed up and was sitting next to us revving as we headed to dropoff some DVD's. It had a coffee can exhaust and a stupid kid behind the wheel. By the middle of second gear my roomie let off because we were 4 car lengths ahead. Now I was moderately impressed. So we looked for bikes to race. Found an R6, lost, but wasn't nearly as bad as you'd think. Kept up really well through second, but by third... well.. it was a bike.

So we dropped off the DVDs & went to the twisties we always run. Then I became seriously impressed. The more gas you give it, the more grip you have. I don't know of anything other than an Evo VIII that handles anything like it in its price range. The traction control is just as good (if not better) as anything Porsche has released. It was very, very flat in the corners, and the same streets that punish your kidneys in any stiff car I've been in barely registered as bumps at all.

I'm convinced. Worth every penny of that 30k. I don't care how ugly it is. Nothing in it's price range can compete. Maybe the '06 EVO VIV will, but it's not out yet. I want one. Immediately. Only 1 CC left to pay!

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that you're writing about a Subaru WRX?

You raced a wrong mustang.

Try doing that to a Cobra

2006 Evo IX has a 10 hp increase to 286hp.

Porsche's are known for one thing.  Braking.  They have some of the best in the business.

If the Mustang you refer to has a "Potato Shooter" exhaust, it isn't dual.  You "beat" a V6 Mustang.

That's it? 10hp? Blah. They need to bring the FQ-400 to America. 0-60 in 3.5, faster than a Carerra GT or Zonda for a fraction of the price.

Mmm, yeah they stop hard, but thing stuck in my mind about the last run of 911 turbos was the grip.

Callisto: he came to us, didn't exactly get to pick. This thing pulls cars though like a moth to a flame. A towtruck even wanted to go for it at one point. btw, it walks away from Cobras up until around 100mph.

Karaya: We found out who it was. It really is a GT, but the owner is kinda dumb & has a ricer mentality. Sad thing to happen to a car that coulda been quick =P

I used to race stock WRXs in autox...  It took a really talented driver to keep up with the F-stock pack and the litany of excuses the WRX kids came up with to explain how I kicked their butts in a stock trans-am was endlessly entertaining.

Not dogging on the WRX since it's a nice car, but SCCA competitions tend to tell a different story and the f-body camaro and firebird post times that are grossly out of proportion to their status as performance vehicles.  The same goes on open track courses.  Take a WRX and drive it for a whole day against a stock Z-28 or trans-am, and see who calls a wrecker to haul their ride home at the end of the day.  The only thing an F-body driver needs to bring to the track is a spare set of front brake rotors.  A WRX driver needs to bring a spare turbo, center diff, and a wad of cash for the tow-truck driver.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

And a spare 2nd gear in an STi. They go out after awhile of hard shifting... but that's what warranties are for :)

It's a rally car at heart though, wouldn't expect phenomal track performance (or you'd see alot more of them in JGTC). Now, put it on some dirt or gravel vs that same F-body and lets see what happens :D

I'd rather have RWD than AWD on an autocross car anyways, but for street stoplight to stoplight runs, gimme the STi anyday.

Yea, an AWD car will almost always have a better street launch than a RWD car, no question about it.

I killed my first/second gear synchro in a single autox day.  The trannie is still in fine shape after 4 years of racing, but sometimes it won't go into first without double-clutching.  Sometimes I have to even start in second because it just won't go into first.  I had been jamming the trannie into first during hard deceleration on a course that had a very fast entry and a very slow exit on turn 3, and after that the syncro just didn't work right all the time.  I've put more than 50k miles and full race season on the trannie since then so it doesn't NEED a rebuild, but it's irritating to have to pump the clutch occasionally to get started in first.  The dang car just won't die.  Even the diff has been making noise when I turn and I've been told it's only a few miles from dying... for the last 30k miles :)  The same issue in a WRX generally means $2500 min payout for something that's gonna break soon in a spectacular fashion.

That's why I haven't put a supercharger on my car yet :)  In stock condition with 102,000 miles on the engine, it'll still spin the tires in second at 40-50 mph and that's plenty scary for this kid.

I dunno what Mustang you raced... but the <04 STi's are even with my M3 until about 80 MPH, then I start walking (with an even launch).

The >03 SVT Cobras wipe the floor with me in a straight line.  Their trap speeds are ungodly for the price.

PS:  If your buddy intends to track the STi, a sway bar upgrade will fix some of the understeer.
