Palm with WIFI card.
« on: June 18, 2005, 08:12:12 AM »
Has anyone here got one of those? Either with buildt in WIFI or those CF cards?

Now that we have WIFI net service here at my dads summerhouse i was thinking that it may be the perfect gift for him to use for e-mail etc.

How good are the WIFI modules in them? and how good is the email software and are there any potential virus problems?

thx for any advice.

The WiFi is the best in any handheld out there (there were some reviews of palm vs pocketpc, and palms performance was 3-4x pocketpc performance).

However, ALL PDA wireless is fairly low power, so don't expect the same distances you get out of a laptop.

Palm no longer make any PDAs with built in Wireless, you have to buy the Wireless SD Card and it only works in some of the models (ie T3, T5, LiveDrive).

There are loads of email software available, I use Chattermail which is an IMAP push based solution (similar functionality to a Blackberry). Then theres SnapperMail which is your more traditional mail client and is very very nice.

The LiveDrive is a nice unit, good screen, 4Gb hard drive (makes a great MP3 player), you can even convert DVDs or movies onto it.

While WiFi is the absolute buisness; for what you seem to be after a smart fone is probably a better bet.

The is what we've just bought in for Copenhagens borgerrepresentation

Why didn't you go for a Treo, I believe you'll find the Mobile Windows experience less pleasant ;)

A smartphone would be a good idea for me perhaps, but id like to customise a pure pda with wifi for his use. He is 60 and sits in the sun all day so nothing to complicated until winter comes and he gets to cool his brain down a notch.

Thx vulcan, i an thinking about a zire72 or T3 with an SD card.

How about viruses on those platforms?

Virus's are pretty non-existant, but you can get Palm AV software just to be safe.
