Variable, customized weapon loadouts
« on: June 29, 2005, 01:44:08 AM »
I would like the option to leave the puny .303s or 7.9mms at home and just take cannons. How about it? I for one, sucky pilot that I am, have never said "Dang, sure am glad I brought 2000 round of ball ammo to use on these armored targets." The practice of removing light machineguns in favor of decreased weight/increased performance while keeping the heavy mgs or cannons seems to have been practiced in the war. If this is, in fact, the case, how about giving us the ability to dump one set of weapons while keeping the rest? Granted, it would require a slight retooling of the loadout selection screen, but it doesn't always display clearly for me on some a/c, and I'd be more than willing to accept a simple sheet on the clipboard with boxes to check if that's what it took (to prevent a lengthy array of possible armaments, displayed in rows currently), if such a step backwards were to give us greater flexability in weaponry.

Slightly drunk, wanted to post this before I forgot again. Squaddie brought it up, thought it had some merit. Flame/Agree to your hearts' content.

The little peashooters do serve a purpose.
How else are you gonna nicely let the guy in front of you know you're behind him and are about to kill him with your cannons?

This has been up quite a few times before and I believe it's got a strong support in the community, including my self. However, last answer I heard was a "NO".

We can always hope.

Sit on runway, select peashooter, hold trigger down until counter gets to 0, take-off. You now have what you asked for.

If in RL a pilot didn't want the small cal guns he most likely told his crew chief just to not load the ammo as opposed to completely removing the guns. Yes, it takes time and not loading them up in the first place would be quicker but I doubt we will ever get that option.

Many time I rtb in my A5 with nearly a full load of 7.2s. They are a bit useless in most situations. I don't use tracers so they aren't even good for spooking.

I actually did kill an F4F with my 303's in a zeke once. I don't know which of us was the most surprised.

Why would any pilot request to leave a heavy gun in its mounting and not put ammo in place for it? Makes no sense actually...

ALOT of field mountings/armament changes happened in the field, many times not documented to allow the pilot to avoid Command from giving him a hassle.

Off the top of my head, the removal of the 20mm gun in the P38 which gave them enough room for 6 .50 cals, it was used and used operationally.

Got any links? I'd kill for this loadout.

I love the peashooters like the hurrican Mk1 or 109G-2. With the Hurrican peashooters i like to get up close and let loose of my anger, then I watch a spit, or 51 go BOOM!!! in 3 seconds, then with my 109G-2 i like to wound the guys pilot and blast him with my 20mm.

But Peashooters are very help ful for me cuz i dont run out of cannon rounds that fast. I use them far and up close. But they work the best up close.

I'm not saying they (the light machineguns) are entirely useless; I'm just saying I'd like to have more options available. If the weight of weaponry and ammo is modelled, then why not allow us to tinker with our loadouts more? I wouldn't think it would be all that much work (could be off here), as there is already some variety in loadouts, but all involving a standard weapon set with 1 or 2 options. If I've got 20 and 30mm cannon on board, a pair of 303s or 30cal guns don't mean watermelon to me. I'd rather offset the weight of the cannon as much as possible by dumping the machine guns, or (as del pointed out) cram my 38 full of brownings by dumping the hizooka.

Additionally, I'd say this would only be feasible on the planes with updated models (38s, 190s,hmm not sure if the ki84 had multiple weapon packages...). Obviously, any changes to the models of the old planes would be wasted time and effort, since they're getting updated in a few weeks when ToD comes out. :p

yeah peashooters work great on pilots, especially dedly if the target is 2-3 sectors away from home ... that wounded pilot not going to make it back to family.

What would be nice is having greater flexibility in the armaments historically. like alot of attck and fighter a/c had large cannons avail to them in the 30, 40 , 75 mm calibre size range.
