Speaking of long cords, do you guys know where to find the best quality phone line for a 56K modem.  It needs to be about 20 feet long because the phone jack is in the other room.  I imagine if the comp was right at the phone jack, we could enjoy a much better connection.

i'm no expert on USB .... but CAT-5 can barely even move gigabit-ethernet ..... you need CAT-6 really or fiber or something......

I'd Imagine USB might be somewhat the same ... if you aren't pushing huge speed and data through it ... is it worth it?

External drives and scanners may push the limits Mane...

I use WIFI in the house, but i sometimes connect 2 of my puters with a crossover but only 100mbit, no gigabit.

Rightfoot,

I got my last 20' phone cord from a hole in the wall computer store.  It had a donut magnet choke built in near one of the ends, and it worked great.  Some people swear by those magnet chokes on modem lines.  I never did enough testing to have an opinion, other than the only really long phone cord I ever used for a computer had the choke, and it worked fine.  There are clip-on magnets that might work just as well.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Found some cables made by AC Ryan. Anyone heard of them? Pretty cheap and shielded with blue, green or red lights
