WOOOMP! WOOOOOOMP!!!
« on: June 15, 2000, 05:20:00 PM »
Well today is a sad day for 'ol hb  . My dad's (he bought my share of it when I got married) boat runs in the boat trader today.

Twelve years ago I was out on the river in an old tired '75 Apollo Jet boat and saw an equally rough looking, but good mechanically, V drive boat. I told dad about it and we proceeded to get in touch with the guy hoping to trade. The guy was game and took us for a ride in his boat. WOW is all I could say. What a difference between a V drive and a jet. While the jet just sat there and made a lot of noise, the V drive delivered the power to the water instantaneously. We gave the guy some money and our old jet boat. I took the V out and used it like it was for one season. That winter ('90 I think) we put her in our body shop (beige building in the background) and put a base/clear paint job on it. We bought some Bassett wet pipes, had new seats made, detailed the engine, etc.

In the summer of '90 she was ready for the river. Me and the buds had great times in it over the next several years. She will outrun pretty much anything on the water around here, and looks beautiful doing it. She is the victim of personal water craft that have taken over the lakes and rivers like a cancer. Dad wants to buy one of those new waverunner/jet ski thingies like everybody else has. If I had the spare money I'd buy the boat myself.

For anybody who is interested heres a couple of specs:

'77 Sanger flat bottom hull, Fresno Calif.
Casselle V Drive
460 Cubic Inch Ford Engine
Bassett wet pipes
Tandem Trailer

Owners of sea doos etc., no offense but there is nothing like roaring down a smooth river on a late summer afternoon at around 100 mph. To hell with practicality.

"Owners of sea doos etc., no offense but there is nothing like roaring down a smooth river on a late summer afternoon at around 100 mph. To hell with practicality."

Amen.

We own a 75 Beachcraft Mariah with a 455 Olds.  (Uses a Berkley jet.)  It looks much like your boat, but with a cover over the engine.  As long as you don't mind burning 5 gallons of gas per hour nothing beats hearing the sound of a massive big block V-8 redlined at almost 5000 rpm just behind you.   (Not to mention you can outrun almost any other boat on the water.)

We are waiting to take it out for the first time this season.  (Been windy here in Oregon recently.   )

Isn't it funny bloom how all the good looking muscle boat hulls came out in the seventies or early eighties? You just cannot beat the roar of that big block. And if you're a single man pulling up to the sand bar, picking up female passengers is not a problem  .

Do you ski bloom? I could tell you some unbelievable stories of HB & friends on slalom behind the V drive

Heh, that is one COOL looking dive boat.

Do you have special racks for storing the scuba tanks at hi speeds?

And for unplanned wreck diving, where are the torpedoes?

Dude, one thing I want to know is; how much GAS does that babe guzzle an hour?

<hears American whine about gas prices being expensive, checks local gas station; one litre (that's about 1/4th of a gallon or something like that) $1.20>

Even if I could afford such a boat, i couldn't afford running it   Must have been a blast riding it though.

Ski, lol, I have a hard time doing that.  Mainly tubing for me.

Hblair I did notice that.  Seems like all the newer boats have smaller engines (305 Chevy) and deeper hulls.  They just don't look as sleek and muscular as the mid-70s stuff.

As for gas per hour StSanta, well lets just say you probably would need to take a loan to pay for it.   (Ours burns about 3 - 5 gallons per hour when going fast.)

Actually this boat isn't as bad as you would think. I've heard V Drives tend to be more fuel efficient than jets. If you can keep your leg out of it you can boat for 6-8 hours on a full load of fuel (2-10 gallon tanks).
I think the main reason is the gearing. Its geared pretty high. The boat idles at like 20 miles per hour.

And unlike your jet, this has no reverse. It has a handle next to the driver, when pulled back she is in gear, when pushed forward she is out of gear hehe. You can throw it out of gear idling but you have to kill it to put her in gear.

Like I said, one ride in it and you would agree, To hell with practicality.

Nice ride HB but isn't the engine a little undermodelled?

Yeah the driver is pongo.

Thats the beauty of muscle boats, they set 'em up like a car. You even operate the throttle with your right foot. Left foot operates the the transom plate.
