Deet
« on: June 30, 2005, 07:53:10 AM »
This past weekend I was at a party. It was an all day outside thing. The bugs were very bad, and they had Repel there..something I never used before. It has DEET in it, and although Ive used Off and stuff before, with no effect, the Repel may have effected me.

I probably used it 4 to 5 times that day. I ended up drunk..and tried to crash in a tent for the night. Between the wife getting up to pee every ten minutes, and the heat, I longed for my AC and bed. So we headed home...just a short drive (she drove) and I just jumped into bed.

When I woke up..I was laying there and felt a funny thing happeneing with my chin. It was twitching. AFter waiting for it to go away for about a 1/2 hr I went downstairs to look in the mirror. I could see it twitch rapidly. Kinda freaky. I took a shower and after awhile it went away. What do you think?

A. Reaction from many coats of DEET and going to bed with it.
B. Hangover (Ended up with no hangover as I drank alot of water)
C. Tired ( Actually not to tired..slept good once home)

Highly unlikely that DEET would cause a nerve in your chin to twitch. Have you had extremely uncontrollable desire to watch any Kirk Douglas movies recently?

I've heard DEET is really the only effective bug repellant, but I use it very sparingly and always shower as soon as practical after its use.

I think side effects similiar to what you describe have been noted in cases of overexposure to garden chemicals, but I can't recall the product right now.   I think it was insecticide though, not repellant.

Deet isn't an insecticide. Biting insects sense CO2, that's how they find their targets, deet works by blinding their co2 sensors for awhile. At this point it is not a carcinogen. And in my opinion it's the best skeeter repelent, I use deep woods off.  And it's very unlikely that it caused your chin to twitch.

Actually I'm surprised that you've lived this long with out any episodes of facial muscle twitching before. The causes of it could range from the completely harmless and forgetable to a whole bunch of bad and scary things. So I would advise that you don't worry about and don't research it unless it becomes a problem. And if it does, don't post it here, just go to the clinic.

Of course the ingestion of large amounts of alcohol couldn't have any relationship to the twitching........

Yeah, it prolly wasn't the DEET that did it.  I put that to the test when we camped up in the Willamette National Forest at Lake Timpanogas.  I've never been in a place that was so infested with mosquitos, and my family owns a cabin in Northern Wisconsin with a swamp behind it.  We were there for three days, no showers, and between the five of us we used up four cans of Deep Woods Off/Cutter.

Years ago I saw a news show on TV that did a report on deet and they found that a small percentage of the population can have a bad reaction to deet.

As I recall it was more of a respiratory reaction though.  One family said their boy died of respiratory failure after using bug repellent that had deet.

Of course that was years ago so I have no hard proof to offer you.

On the other hand, muscle twitches are quite common and you most likely have nothing to worry about.
Do not attribute to malice what can be easily explained by incompetence, fear, ignorance or stupidity, because there are millions more garden variety idiots walking around in the world than there are blackhearted Machiavellis.
