I have taken numerous hits from Hispano's with no loss to my aircraft, most recently from a Typhoon to my Ki-84's wing.

If I am being inaccurate I will get two or three kills with the Ki-84, but if I am on target the gun package annilates fighters in very short order.

For example, one of my last fights was against a couple of N1K2's and I spent 284 rounds of 20mm ammo getting an assist on the first one and the remaining 16 rounds completely removing the second N1K2's wings, tail and setting it ablaze.

The difference?  Accuracy.  If you hit with the Ki-84, it will kill.

One of the big reasons it is unpopular is that, coupled with it's merely average firepower, is the fact that Combat Trim cripples it's manueverability and most people, I suspect, use Combat Trim.

I don't have more info on the guns right now.  I can post some from Tony William's book when I get home though.

1 question

did the Ki-84-1b use the same engine as the 1a version? Is it faster than Ki-84-1a (AH)?

The Ki-84-Ia used a variety of engines.  I think the one in AH is using the best of the lot, the 1,990hp Ha-45-21.  That is the best engine used by any Ki-84-I.

Yes, and I have killed people with a single ping.  That's just luck not skill or gun package.  In any case, if it existed in different gun package versions then there should not be a problem having it.

That's wrong.

If it had been a pilot kill I'd have agreed, but I didn't kill the pilot.  With 16 rounds I took off every part of the N1K2-J and set it on fire.  AH has a strict damage system that does not allow for that without the required damage threshold being crossed.

You will never see an N1K2-J lose a wing to a single .50 cal hit as it simply doesn't do enough damage.

The 2x20mm and 2x12.7 are plenty to kill people with.  If HTC added the Ib with 4x20mm nobody would ever fly the Ia (for good reason).  The Ki-84 thats in the game now is a sweet little ride, the only reason I can think that nobody uses it is that it isn't an "extreme" plane.  The Spit 5 outmanuevers it (barely) and has much more powerful guns, and the "fast" planes still out-run the Ki-84, so why give up the added manueverability and (more importantly) the Hizookas?

Yeah, the Ki84 is not inadequetely armed as it is now.

The other night I chased a P51 down.  Of course it was a new guy who didn't realize that we were at 5k.  At about 400-600 off I let off a long burst slowly pulling up just at his wing root with my 2 .50's.  Probably a second long.

I sawed the wing off.

It amazes me how some of you guys can aim, pull the trigger and adjust AOA seemingly so casually and with such precision. The best I can do is get in the neighborhood, spray half my ammo and pray for an assist :D :lol

Eh.... Well...

I had 100 rounds of 20's left when I started chasing him.  I didn't hit a single round.

When I took off his wing though, he was flying straight :D  .
