P-38J "Maloney's Pony" 1FG/27FS Work in Progress
« on: July 06, 2005, 09:26:36 PM »
Hi all, thanks to Guppy's suggestion, I'm starting this P-38J "Maloney's Pony"

As to be expected, I did start with my Florida Cracker P-38, however, I've made extensive changes to the rivet structure, metal wearing, shaping, and shine (including a slight blue hue on upper surfaces), and minor fixes to the panel lines. I'm hoping this gives a much better feel to the aircraft, and so far, I'm liking the effect changes. Any and all advice is always appreciated.

Hey knite... looks really good to me.

One thing that can be noted though... if you look at this pick...

look at how the "non visible" plane lines are beveled. What I mean is that you dont really see plane lines but you see the beveling from how the metal has been indented around the underlaying structure.

Note that this plane is very clean and polished but still even in the less glossy parts you do see this beveling/indenting.

So basicly what Im trying to say is that working with shadows and other effects to create this look, in areas where you dont have plane lines today, would make it look really good.

Hiya Tex. =)

I'm still working on that a little, but I don't want to eliminate the lines entirely. We've gotten used to seeing the lines there, and trying to emulate a line that would take literally .1 pixel with a 1-2 pixel range minimum is very difficult. Also, depending on which seam, and what angle the light is can make a huge difference as to whether or not you can see the seams. Here's a couple of examples to see what I mean.

Even with this poor picture quality (on a 2 seated P-38) you can easily see the panel lines on the engine fuselage.

Here's one of a P-38 nose,

And one of the underwing / inside fuselage

I definitely want to see about getting some of the "deformation" around the seams if I can. I thought I did have that on at one time, but at some point I must have removed it for some reason... Hopefully I'll have a few more pics in a couple of days.
Thanks for the advice, every little bit helps =)

hmm... Tex, I think I misunderstood your post.

I think I know what you're talking about now. Like, not panel lines, but patterned metal deformations?

Oh, and Killn,
I beleive SkyChimp gave me the go ahead on doing it, so it'll be my next project after this one.

Yes knite.

the metal deformation which is from the metall beeing pressed on to the structure underneath creating "even more planelines" then it really has. But as you see in the picture posted its not actually planelines but rather deformations so making them look like planelines would give the wrong feel.

Tail wing plane lines look too thick to me.. foot wear a bit too rich and the wing plane lines might be too heavy...

I really love the indentation things we have been talkin about... they look great!!
