RAM question
« on: July 08, 2005, 12:22:26 AM »
ok I recently got 512 mb ddr400 ram which the maker(siemens) says is compatable with my comp, the computer store tech says if I have the original ddr3200 in the 400 would clock down. Now on a fresh install of AH2 it does not get any farther then the plane cache itll do 3 then reboot. Now some other offline games I have run fine, is Il2fb memory intensive anyway? Then I go to render an image in poser4 and the thing crashes.  Same with Star Wars Galaxies Irun anywhere between crash on login and up to 20 mins before it crashes(but 20 min smooth as silk). Was the tech guy blowing it out his rear when he said that the two different mem types are compatable? I thought it was new power supply, but then AH2 wouldnt crash on cache screen would it?

PC3200 RAM is DDR  memory that runs at 400 FSB.  If you have PC3200 then its already at that speed.  PC2100 runs at a 266mhz FSB, and PC2700 runs at a 333mhz FSB.

If you have either one of the others, PC2100 or PC2700, your new PC3200 will run with the older RAM, it will simply run at the speed of the slowest stick.  Sounds to me like you dont have a compatibility issue, you have a quality issue.  There is a program out there for testing RAM, but I'm too tired to think of it right now.  Hopefully someone can link you to the download.  If not, I'll come up with it in the morning.

http://www.memtest86.com/

thats what we used to use ... not shure if it works w/ 64 bit pc's though .

also going into your bios and turning off "quick boot"   will set ur pc up for memory test on start up .

(mines set this way cause i like to over clock )

ps, not all memory is compatable or stable .
even if they say it is .

Its strange cause Lockon was a slideshow and now its smooth and doesnt crash, but AH and SW:G do. I think I will use that memtest thanks.

If the mem fails try manually setting the ram timings a bit more conservative.
more conservative means more clock cycles for  RAS, CAS and RAS to CAS, one more might do it.

What s the exact brand name of your motherboard and which bios version do you have? Sometimes newer bios promises better memory compatib.

What exact name / type do each of your memory sticks have, are there 2 or 3 now?

It is entirely possible that some games put data in the new ram that does not make any diffrence when it gets messed up and others have data there that makes them crash when its messed up.

Yep, Memtest is the one I was thinkin of.  I've found out a few bad sticks that way, and even the manufacturers use it.  No one's gonna refuse to RMA bad memory if you tell em it failed Memtest.
