Quite remarkable.

Old news, Metalstorm has been around for about 5 years now. Do they show the pistol? The Metalstorm pistol is about as close as you can get to a real life Judge Dread "Double Whammy" pistol.

Not the same.

The one which Morph posted is by Metal Storm, an Australian company, and uses stackable rounds with gunpowder. Gunpowder is electronically ignited. That's how the fire rate is controlled.

DREAD is completely different technology.

The 1M rounds a minute is sort of a misnomer, the real use is that you can essentially fire a bunch of rounds simultaneously. In a pistol, it might not be terribly useful, but as a point defense system, it might have something.

The Posleen books had Sherman tanks that had been modified to hold large caliber (eg, 105mm) MetalStorm turrets. Against a heavilly armored threat, it would be devestating indeed, but it's hard to see a good use for it yet. The person who figures out a way to use MetalStorm effectively in combat might have a real edge.

My apologies, I read about the two weapons systems around the same time and got them confused.

Actually you couldn't be more wrong, the Metalstorm pistol looks very effective. It was a 4 barrel jobbie, electronic controlled firing with 10 or 12 rounds per barrel. In theory one barrel could carry non-lethal rounds, another could carry standard ammo, another AP, and another some sort of HE round. You could electronically switch ammo types (perhaps even with voice recognition a la Judge Dredd). The pistol could also be keyed to you, the prototype had a ring the firer wore, but biometrics could be developed for the production model. You could also select the firing sequence, ie 1, 2, 3 rounds - even the full "clip".

the one you posted is interesting as well. A weapon that uses centrifugal force to eliminate any possible recoil and a "golf ball" like projectile to boot.

One of the main selling points of their pistol technology is that in a 3 round burst, all 3 bullets exit the barrel before the gun recoils, giving extremely tight groupings.

Rummage around for their Area Denial Weapon System video. It's kinda interesting. No more mines. Instead, a couple guys with backpack loads and a laptop. Each backpack has an array of metal storm barrels loaded with heavy mortar rounds, HE grenades, flashbangs, cameras, etc. The sensor suite it comes with monitors the area, and you point & click people out of existence. Supposed to be able to drop something like (iirc) 380 mortar rounds & 1800 grenades on target in 0.25 seconds.

Neat stuff.
