Asus A8V Deluxe , my new friggin headache
« on: July 15, 2005, 12:01:51 PM »
Hey guys as you all know I was getting this new pc ,well it arrived and I set it up and all went smoothly except for the unusually long boot up sequence.

Well Lo and behold last night I re arrange the power cables in a way that only  way the cables were not drawing power for multiple devices(i.e. Hard rive was in a single line , cd rom and vid card) Well the  boot up problems went away and everything was fine I even played  a couple of 3d games including Lomac and holy hell  how cool it was the fps and the grafics .

Well last night I was having shut down problems and I had to use the power button to shut it off , and when I started it up again the same damned issue came back the long, long ,long,  boot up sequence, the third time I boot it up it just hanged there detecting the drives.( It detected them it just hanged there)

To make  a long story short I've tried the following connecting the Hardrives only with the power directly to the motherboard ,slow boot. Connecting the  Cd Roms only, fast boot lets me access the  setup screen quickly.

Only connecting the neccesarry equipment it worked but without getting into  windows.

Done:
Updated BIOS
Used one memory stick at a time in all slots
Reset the BIOS.

I've noticed this only happens when the hard drive any of the two are connected to both the power and the IDE Slot on the Motherboard , I can have the power to them and the mother board doesn't feel it.

I've noticed however that my 3500 64 XP system voltage is at about 1.4V and it dips to about 1.38, so again I don't know whether it's a power issue, from the looks of it it isn't, or it's  a hardware compatibility issue.

From what I've read in several forums this board is a pain to set up(thanks guys in the forums that recommended it :D )

But once you do it screams and for the brief time I was able to play games last night I see how it does scream.  I'm hoping to ( insert favorite deity)  It isn't  ther mother board itself since I know it works becuase it worked last night it just needs the right configuration.

Thank you kindly.
As always El 4 eyes.

Sounds like you could have a bad psu. Check the 12 volt rail with a multi tester and see if your getting a lot of fluctuations in the voltage and amps. If so you have a defective power supply unit. I would get rid of the antec anyhow. The last 3 that I have used have all bit the dust within 6 mos. My newest psu is the Ultra X Connect that I got off of tiger direct for 49 bucks which happens to be on sale for 20 bucks after rebate. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1028624&sku=ult31590&CMP=ILC-FPM19

Also check your bios settings to see if you have boot up floppy seek enabled. If so disable it and also enable fast or quick boot option in the bios as well and see if this helps. Also try reseating the ram in your system. If your still having problems feel free to email me and Ill do what I can to help out.

Might have fixed it, I raised the vcore to 1.45 manually and the Vdimm to 2.6 and it boot it up in 3 mother flacking seconds holy mother of kurt tank!

BTW Antec PSU is new I sent it to antec through rma and they sent me a new one so I don't think it's the psu.

Sorry am just too excited :D

Noticed something if I interleave the IDE hardrives it will hang if I just leave one of the Hardrives alone it will boot without hessitating.

I don't know what the fruck is wrong with this mobo I think it just doesn't like IDE HDs.

Any A8V users care to comment?

Are your IDE drives set to "CS" (cable select) or do you set them manually to Master and Slave?  And I assume you have the IDE drives on the same interface cable.

I set them up in master and slave mode.

Thing is my newer hardrive , when it is plugged in to the power and the  IDE cable the  BIOS just hangs , if I connect my older 20GB IDE hardrive it boots up in no time :-/

I have A8V with both SATA and IDE harddrives attached - the bootup takes long but only because of the time Promise SATA interface takes for drive detection.

Then again I boot it once a day maximum.

OK Noticed something If I boot up and set the 250GB IDE HD as primary the thing hangs like a mother , now if I set the l;arger drive to slave and  set the BIOS to NOT detect the HD automatically it boots into windows fine in less than 10 seconds and WInblows detects it. Thing is I want to make the Larger drive the primary :-(

I mean it works fine right now,in fact am typing right now form my new PC but whenever I either try to make another install of windows in the Slaved drive it either doesn't allow to boot it with the BIOS or it coprrupts the Win XP installation files :-/

BUt the older drive has to be set up as  the primary or it won't see it :-(
