Need some help on how to make a DVD, with chapters etc. Something that would be playable in any dvd player.

The files are in .avi and .mpg format.

Any help is appreciated.

I use:

DVD Shrink

and

CDBurnerXP Pro

Ok here's some more specific info. most burning programs dont convert properly for me so I don't use them to actually burn the movies.

to convert from AVI or Mp4 I use TMPGEnc plus 2.5.

Most important here is making sure the video is 720x480 Mpeg2 format

AND The audio is 224kbit rate and 4800 Hz

Then I de-multiplex the audio from the video using TMPGEnc and a second program called SSRC

Then I import the mpv and mp2 files into DVDlab Pro

This creats the menu if need be but if it's just one move I have it automatically play the video.

Then I compile the DVD project in DVDlab Pro then I burn the Video_TS files using Nero.

It has taken me many screw ups and literally HOURS of encoding to get the process streamlined and working well. AVIs take for ever especially Divx and Xvid

Do I need to demultiplex the audio from the video?

btw thanks for the walkthrough.. encoding now from AVI (may take a while)

what i use is Womble MPEG Video Wizard and MPEG2VCR!
No other software offers no-delay scrubbing, you can edit in native
MPEG format and save without re-encoding. Editing *.VOB files can be very
time consuming and slow. But check it out for yourself, i tested alot
DVD-Video editing software, but this small tools are by far the fastest
and yet simply to use.

After that i also use DVDlab Pro to build the final DVD

A few things to note. There isn't any consumer-grade DVD media (blanks) which will univerally workin all DVD players.
Also, the cheaper your burner the more random the results. Besides making frequent coasters they wil also burn badly and you have skips and anomolies.
And if you're capturing/converting video to DVD format on your PC you may want to look for a fast HDD with a large cache (8mb). It makes the capture and conversion much smoother and just about error free. Anyway.

and check on the player(s) you intend to play these homegrown DVD's on. You can check to see what media has been reported to work best and also what dvd blanks your burner works well with - or not.

There are lots of tutorials there also.

It depends on your DVD authoring software. Some do it for you wich can be yet ANOTHER hour in the process some don't. Personally I know it's done right w/ tmpgenc So I tend to stick with what works.
