CD-Rom Power Quitting
« on: August 02, 2005, 10:53:31 AM »
Ok, I am at my wits end trying to fix my computer. Help me undderstand this problem, someone ... please!

I plug power into the CD rom - and it gets power - so you would think just plug the gray cable (whatever its called) into it and presto! But, when I plug the ribbon into it (the ONLY way it will go) - it gets no power. When I unplug it power. Plug gray ribbon in - no power. I have made sure the cable is securly attached to mboard and drive. I have tried multiple cables. I have tried the ribbon with the blue end, I have tried the ribbon with both black ends. NOTHING until I take the ribbon out - then I have power.

This is driving me whoopee crazy. Can someone please tell me - does this mean my mboard is hosed? Do I now have a paperweight? ;)

Thanks

Paul/Nim

I'll suggest a couple of things:

1) This behavior sounds similar to when a ribbon is backwards.

2) That avatar could be causing the problem.

either cable is wrong type ... but if you had it working then id suspect a cdrom that went toast ... ive had several cdroms do this . or a new one that needs dos drivers to work.

Sounds to me like a bad ribbon cable.

Swap it out & see if it still does it.
(Take you maybe 3 min total)

Make sure cable is plugged in correctly at the motherboard. Red leader on cable edge should be closest to power plug on CD-rom.
