Rush Karelia
Germany invaded Soviet Union on June 22nd 1941. Three days later, on June 25th, the Soviets launched bombing attacks against several locations in southern Finland. The Finns had anticipated this move and were in full alert, ready to take back Karelia, which they had lost in the Winter War. The Continuation War had begun.
The offensive to re-capture the Karelian Isthmus started on July 31st 1941. Viipuri was besieged within two weeks and finally liberated by Finnish troops on August 30th. For four days following Viipuri's capture, the Finnish troops chased the remains of the Red Army to the old Russo-Finnish border. The Finnish troops halted their offensive just 30 kilometers north of Leningrad.
