Skuzzy - Craters and ATI?
« on: July 23, 2005, 06:11:26 PM »
Was just curious if there was anymore info on the "craters covering vehicles / buildings" Z-Bias issue. Is it only on ATI cards? or is it an overall thing. Building some stuff in the OE with dead shapes / craters - starting to drive me batty.

Also while on the subject of the Object editor - any word on the polyID not affecting objects? (srry - posted in TE forum on that one, but no responses....lol damn TOD!)

GEforce 6800 Ultra here....and I challenge anyone to find a GV in a crater...and kill it (much less, see it).

Could you send us a film showing you actually doing that?  We have not been able to duplicate this feature in house.

Ideally, the film would show you driving up to the crater or shore battery, and sinking into it.

Skuzzy, it doesn't have any depth to a GV rolling across it but the 'ring' around the main crater does visually and  covers GVs to the extent you cannot see the GV nor the icon (if you're in an aircraft).

Yeah.  In other words, it doesnt make a hole below ground level, it piles the hole up above ground level, but only visually.  If you roll a tank or a plane through a crater, its like it isnt there physically.  Yet it's visually disruptive enough that a Panzer can hide in one and all you can see is the top of his turret.  The striated brown color of the blast crater blends in quite well with the standard panzer camo pattern.  Even bombing buildings is sometimes difficult because a bomb crater will overlay the building, making it hard to see (and difficult to tell if it's up or not).

Here's a .WMV of the crater. I'm pretty sure it's a zbias issue. It hides vehicles and buildings when looking at them from  high - side / above.  From the air, if diving down on a gv in a crater, you cant see it until you're d400/under maybe. Think it's the same distance as an object, if built without a max distance flag takes untill it shows up in game. Otherwords - you have to be right beside it / on top of it to see it.

i'll send u film and screen shots Skuzzy.  cessnard was the panz, easily u can see how he was clinging to the SB exploiting this bug,  be sure to double click his name in viewer to observe it all.

the screen shots were taken soon after an update came out.  I think it was 2 updates ago. wouldn't have noticed the panz if it hadn't fired,  then I started looking real hard for it,  as I panned around with hat switch it would have either a ghost look or be completely invisible by the crater.
