Please return to the cool grey forum look ...
« on: July 26, 2005, 06:11:44 PM »
Hi,

I just noticed that the old forum design was great, really cool looking, functional and very clear even at high resolution and small font size.

Of course, I only noticed how great it was because it's gone now :-( It's not even user-configurable!

Olive drab and stencilled letters ... just what Lieschen Müller would expect a military-themed board to look like.

(To clarify: Lieschen Müller is not a real person. She's proverbial, and she's probably a blonde. She has no clue of aircraft, either.)

Regards,

Henning (HoHun)

I agree.  On most BBS's you can choose the style and colors.

But maybe I ain't used to it anymore.

I disagree. Colors are much more better than the standard communist slate greys.

The thread titles look like they'll be difficult to see for anyone with visual impairment.

Nicer looking though.

Hi Star,

Why did the Aircraft and Vehicles forum turn green?

Mmmmm, because of a website update?  We've been told for months now that a revamp of the website was underway.  I dont remember HiTech or Skuzzy or Pyro ever coming on the BBS and asking our opinions on color schemes or taking a poll on themes.  If it was only this forum that changed, I could see your point.  Ah well.  The day is too nice to argue.  Personally, I enjoy this.  Hopefully, you will too after you get used to it.  No disrespect intended, just expressing my opinion.

Hi Star,

>I dont remember HiTech or Skuzzy or Pyro ever coming on the BBS and asking our opinions on color schemes or taking a poll on themes.

Maybe they should have.

>Personally, I enjoy this.  Hopefully, you will too after you get used to it.

No way. Quality is absolute.

Note the poor rendering quality of the stencilled letters due to anti-aliasing, clearly visible when you magnify the bitmaps (and responsible for an annoying lack of clarity in the original size).

Note also that some of the colours have already been changed from what they were yesterday, the yellowish hue of the listing is gone for example. Black on dark olive still sucks when it comes to legibility, though.

Then the bloody icons ... tiny targets on 1600 x 1200 resolution even with the display cranked up to 120% zoom which is just fine for most other sites, and I don't see a shred of sense in using a "pencil on paper" icon for "edit post" and a "move sheet of paper to the right" icon for "answer post".

That's just functionality ... don't even mention looks!

Ironically, the overall theme implies the Army has taken over the Air Force again, and the Navy with it. That's the exact opposite of the historic trends that had begun before WW2, continued through the war and lead to independend air forces all over the world after WW2.

Well, it is much better than it was yesterday.  I can live with this scheme.

I'm not sure what you are talking about in regards to the icons.  They seem like standard UBB icons and I've never had a problem with them at 1600x1200.

Hi Karnak,

>They seem like standard UBB icons ...

Bad design doesn't get any better just because everyone uses it!

Of course, high standards can be hell if the world agrees on low standards ... still, who should stop me from aiming high? :-)

Hi again,

It's all changing while we talk. I'll close my eyes and hope it's all grey and blue again soon ;-)
