What I liked a lot in the Coral Sea scenario, where we did lots and lots of attacking of CV groups, is *less* deadly ship AA fire but *much* more sturdy ships. This means you need to hit them with a lot more bombs before they go down, but you have better odds of getting through the ack (so torpedo planes can work).
In the main arena, ship attacking is too uneven. If a ship is not manned, you can divebomb it or level bomb it with one aircraft and sink any one ship you pick, but you can't get close in a torpedo plane. If a ship is manned, having it turning makes it much more difficult to hit (as it should) and having someone good in the 5" guns makes it very hard for pilots to get close enough regardless of what plane type you are flying to drop bombs.
I would like it much better with the Coral Sea type of settings. Hitting a manned ship would be a lot harder, but not impossible; and manned or unmanned it would take a lot of hits to put down a ship.
The effect is that, now, it might take N attacks to sink a ship, but N-1 of them are just people getting shot down before they even get to drop bombs. With Coral Sea settings, it still takes N attacks to sink a ship, but a larger number of people get through to at least once to drop bombs before they die.
