Well, the hit detection was refined when AH2 was released so it isn't just rust.  In AH1 the resolution of the hit model was not as high as the resolution of the aircraft model and tha made hitting thin parts, such as wings from 6 o'clock level, easier.  In AH2 they hit detection is the same as the model so you actually need to hit in order to hit.

If you're stuck in the AH1 mentality, here's how you get hits from AH2: Don't shoot at 1k. In Ah1 it was the norm (practicaly required) that you shoot at 1k -- and land hits -- and this ruined a lot of gameplay I feel. Now, don't shoot past 800, EVER, and that's stretching it. 600 should be your realistic maximum firing range. Your best (optimum) hitting range is going to be 300 (I kid you NOT). I know I know, in AH1 such ranges were absurd! But in AH2 the gunnery is far more realistic, as is the gunnery range. Get in close, check your site picture, and blast away. Don't fire at the speck in the very center of your site :)

Follow those guidelines and you'll get tons of kills. You just have to fly into the ranges specified before you open fire.

Doc

I rarely fire over 400 and try to close within 200 to fire.

I also find that the convergence in the Hangar is the best when firing from that range.  some set multi-gunned planes convergence to the same distance.  That means that hitting something is more difficult at any range...and that the point where convergence is set damage to the plane is in a small concentrated area.  If you hit something vital it works...but you will suffer lower hit % because of it.  some say they might have rubber bullits.....this may be caused by setting convergence on guns to same distance....you're firing at a tiny area, easier to miss and overall doing less damage to your opponent.

Some people blow off convergence also, like its not a big deal.  I suggest setting it to where you'll usually shoot, and be pretty consistant about shooting from that far, Because I think they changed how far bullets go, and when they begin to fall more downward.

Gluck gettin that rust off!

If you have convergence set the bullet travels up, higher than the spot, and then arcs down to hit that spot. So if you fire at something past your convergence range the bullet drops a lot further from the pip in your gunsite. I have to second that "Pick a convergence and stick to it" comment.

has anyone mentioned to not shoot at the icon, since the icon has changed position, it will throw you off ( icon distance on enemys has changed and the icon is in a different location) get back to shooting at the plane and quit watching the counter/icon.........

just a thought..also use more deflection shots canopy shots/ belly shots ( where you see more of the plane, rather than dead 6 or near 6 shots ) you be much better off......

but DrDea, you know how to get rid of rust don't ya?  Never Dull :D

LMAO I do the exact same thing. Sometimes I even get lucky sometimes and get a little spark of a hit which will cause him to break thinking he's in danger which is the real mistake because doing so more often then not is what puts him in danger.

agreed 500 or less and I actually prefer shooting at a target thats going up or above me then one thats level with me or diving away
