Flight sim players... time to wax nostalgic:)
« on: March 27, 2001, 09:36:00 AM »
Someone brought up SWOTLW in a thread on the main BBS.  That always gets me thinking about all of the sims I've played in the past.  Man.. there must be over 100 that I've bought.  Don't tell my wife that's almost $4000 in flight sims alone

The ones that stick out as really grabbing my attention:

Falcon
Falcon 3.0
Aces of the Pacific
Fighter Duel
F-117A
A-10 Cuba
Longbow
Comanche
SWOTLW
Jet Fighter (I,II,III)
Warbirds
Flying Circus
AH

Probably the worst I ever bought:

Heroes of the 357th - the landings were just too tricky

I, too, bought every flight sim that hit the market from 1989 to 1998, and the following in order were my favorites:

Boxed:
SWOTL
Aces of the Pacific
Aces over Europe
Longbow and Longbow 2
Strike Eagle III
Falcon 3.0
Silent Service

Online or HTH:
Strike Eagle III
Warbirds and AH (tied for first)
Air Warrior
Falcom 3.0

To date, I have only Aces High and Warbirds 2.77 loaded on the puter...along with Crimson Skies for some quick and unrealistic action.

Nothing planned for the hard drive except WW2 Online, Il-2 and (post beta) WBIII.

First game ever played on a PC by me was a text format and icon displayed sub hunting game in 1984, last box game I've bought was CFS2, which only lasted as long a one tour a piece for both Japan and US.

Silent Service

How'd that plane handle?  Seemed a tad bit too heavy to me.. and a tad bit too submerged

Was a kickass game though.

Commodore C64...
   SubLogic flight simulator
   Chuck Yeager's whatever
   Gunship!
   F-19 (yup) Stealth Fighter
   High Rollers (Harrier sim)

Amiga 512...
   Their Finest Hour
   Thud Ridge
   Red Baron
   F/A-18 Hornet
   Some F-16 game
an A-10 game (needed a special 1 MB card to work)

Macs...
   F-18 Hornet 1.0
   Hornet 2.0
   Hornet Korea
   MSFS
   Falcon ME
   A-10 Cuba

PCs...
   Comanche, Comanche Gold, Comanche 3

   Jane's F-15

   Aces High!

Many more that I'm sure I can't remember right now. Many I bought and never played more than twice.

[Oh my god, anybody remember "Infiltrator"? with James "Jimbo-baby" McGibbits...?]

First flight sim I remember was F-15 Strike Eagle on Commodore64. Fighter Duel Pro on Amiga was kickass at the time. First sim I played over LAN. Pretty funny when you look back at it. F-15 was all green screen HUD looking crap

Showing my age here. Done 'em all, since Flight Simulator for the Apple (Bruce Artwick). Was it really 1979?

Don't forget the original Battle of Britain (made me change from Apple II to IBM clone just to get it!). Jet Fighter and Jet Fighter 2 were great in their time too. Had to make a real arrested landing to end missions successfully.

The others listed were in my inventory as well. I absolutely wince seeing prices now when I recall thinking $20.00 was a high price for a box game. Spend a bunch of money backing up all those floppies to keep from wearing out the originals too!
