If you think that giving any terrorist the title "MAN OF THE YEAR" is a bad idea, you can fire off a letter to the editor at:

letters@time.com

I wrote and told them I would cancel my subscription if they make this mistake, which is so inappropriate for the times.

The TIME Man of the Year, is given to the top Newsmaker of the year. This is why Hitler got it, and Stalin got it, and the home computer got it, and Bin Laden should get it. It has nothing to do with good or bad. TIME would be wimping out if they bowed to the brainless Limbites who don't bother to read before they whine.

Amazing powers of observation   ;) You've been reading again, havn't you, Tahgut?

I don't care about Time's criteria for the "Time Man of the Year" award; I believe it's ill conceived. The name of the award is certainly misleading.

Simply put, I believe its irresponsible to award this title to any terrorist or mass murderer in these times.

Yeah, let's wipe his name out from history, pretend that he never existed. So that in a generation or two our children have to face the same threats all over again without the benefit of prior experience.
After all, we don't want them have it too easy.

Oops, <tosses away little red book>, I guess you all are right......thanks for helping me to be more "right".

I do admit the title "Man of the Year" is unfortunate. They could have called it "newsmaker of the year" or "amazinhunk of the year". Too bad Mr. Luce wasn't thinking ahead 70 years when he came up with the title. Just before we blow Bin Laden away, lets promise to explain what the Time "Man of the Year" is awarded for! Then he won't die happy.

I don't think not putting his hairy mug on Time's cover will erase this piece of toejame from history. I just don't believe in rewarding him with such exposure. "Man or Woman of the Year" should be a positive force not a negative one..

Ok, Tahgut   :)

Miko, you are way, way out in left field, man. I will consider your point of view if you would just be straight-out with it. Leave out the sarcasm, and don't resort to the ridiculous. Who knows, you might persuade me to see it your way ...

How can I refuse such a rational and civil request?
Here is what I dislike about the "well-meaning" anti-Times posts here.

I got momentarily puzzled reading Gunthr's post about Time considering OBL for "Man of the year" but thirty seconds of further reading cured my ignorance of what the title stands for.

Yes, the name is a bit misleading but it is a 70(?) year tradition and there are many more confusing traditions in our society - british queen, non-metric system, etc.

So I would not think any better of OBL if he does appear on Time cover. Neither will anyone who has posted here who opposes such nomination for the reason that "it could be perceived by some people that we are honoring OBL". Even if someone has doubts, I am sure that an article in the Times behind the cover will take care of the explanation.

I take serious exception with people who think that they themselves are in no danger of misinterpretation, but impicitely assume that other people are too stupid to figure out what is going on, so better be kept in the dark and fed politically-correct non-controversial BS.

Don't rush to quote my previous posts here - I still believe that most people (~90%) are too stupid to participate in running our democracy (and most of the remaining 10% are too ignorant) - because it takes a lot of specialised knowlege and intelligence for economic and political decisions.
But I am pretty sure that on moral issues (such as slaughter of innocents) we can safely rely on our fellow-people or care about them enough to explain a thing or two - especially to our children.

Otherwise how do we differ from Stalin or Hitler or OBL who believed that general public should be protected from "evil influences" and complicated decisions?

Year 2001 will not be remembered in History as "Year of Bush Jr." or "Year of Rudy Juliani" or "Year of Brave Firefighters" or "Year of Lax Airport Security" - as deplorable as it may be. It will always be "Year when OBL blew up the Twin Towers".
I would suggest that their cover show the crumbling towers on fire and a small picture of OBL (preferably dead one) in a corner, but it's their decision. I will be more concerned what will be said in the article.

<S> Miko.

I'm not really concerned about how we on the BB would react to bin Laden on the cover of Time Mag, being declared "MAN OF THE YEAR." Or America in general.

Its those people you see dancing in the streets in the Middle East, burning flags and shooting guns in the air that I'm worried about. Or any terrorists anywhere.

If bin Laden gets on the cover, you'l see that image waved all over the place in third world countries and those hard line Muslim extremist schools where terrorism breeds. And probably up on their blackboards in the classroom.

To me, we are at war with terrorism. There is no similarity with past wars. Things cannot procede as normal without acknowledging the difference. Its almost like martial law. We are on a war footing, and you don't aid the enemy in this way, and then try to rationalize it with tortured logic.

You are entitled to your own opinion. But I disagree with it.    :)
