WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Minorities now outnumber whites in Texas, which joins California, Hawaii, New Mexico and the District of Columbia as the only U.S. locales where whites are less than 50 percent of the population, the U.S. Census Bureau said on Thursday.
Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia, New York and Arizona, each with minority populations of about 40 percent, are next in line to have whites outnumbered by non-whites, according to a Census Bureau study of state and county population estimates by race and Hispanic origin.
According to the July 1, 2004 estimates, Texas had a minority population of 11.3 million, comprising 50.2 percent of its total population of 22.5 million.
Of the estimated 293.66 million total U.S. residents estimated on July 1, 2004, 95.81 million, or 32.6 percent, were non-whites.
I wonder if Texas will be a swing state in the future... (yum 30+ electoral votes:))
btw John Kerry was soo close to win Nevada. imo Nevada will be a blue state as more people move to Las Vegas.
