When you said it works on 98 but not XP, I wondered about the IRQ issue. They handle IRQs differently. Although to be honest, I would have expected the opposite problem, if any.

If you installed the Nforce IDE driver Uninstall or disable it and see what happens.

So, you did an upgrade install from an existing copy of Win98SE to XP? Wipe the drive, and start with XP.

first time I tried to install from a freshly formated drive...didn't work, kept rebooting and restarting the installation from the same point.

yesterday, was an upgrade from 98SE to XP, worked but took 2 hours due to reboots caused by the cd drive rebooting the system (no error message just a black screen then the bios flash screen)

bout ready to toss the box out the window and go back using smoke signals

Zmeg all Ide drivers appear to be from microsoft.
