DVD/CD Player Problem
« on: August 18, 2005, 08:46:41 PM »
I just popped in a DVD in the computers DVD drive and loaded up the PowerDVD software that came with my PC so that it would play.

Well, it plays just fine, but the color is completely messed up.  It is still visible, but it looks like the brightness is turned up 100%, but it is not.  It also has a grainy effect to it, almost like the older WWII guncams you'll see.

I ran into this problem with WinMP before, but it had options and things I could control.  This, OTOH, does not.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Check your video settings in windows. Clean the drive using a good quality cleaning disk. Check your video drivers and program codecs and make sure you have the lates ones. Also check the program you are using is up to date and has the latest patches applied. Would also recommend going to the program mfg's website to see if there are any known issues with the program. Run a spyware and virus scan, check to see that your system motherboard is using the lates bios flash version as well as checking to see that your video card has the latest bios flash. Check the drive mfg's website to see if there are any firmware updates that may need to be applied. If all this fails reseat the cables to your drives at both the drive and motherboard ends to make sure they are connected properly and also make sure the cables are in good condition with no crimps kinks etc. Hope this helps!

Not sure if this will be any help at all, but since this is the first time I've seen this happen, I'll share it anyway.

A couple weeks ago, I downloaded the latest video drivers for my nVidea card  v. 77.72

Well, soon afterward I noticed the color on my Windows Media Player went to crap.. tho it had appeared just fine before the 'upgrades'.

Sure enough, they released yet another patch to the drivers late last week/early this week and it's now v. 77.77

Media player is back to normal.

Again, I have no idea if this helps, but found it interesting.

Ahh, see I think thats what my problem is.  I didn't notice it until I got 77.77 installed.  Perhaps that is the problem?

Windx: Thanks for all the info! I checked everything and it is all clean and up to date.  The only thing I didn't do is check the actual connections of the CD drives.  Unfortunately, it's still there.

So, tomorrow I'm gonna dig out the CD and see if a simple reinstall will do the trick.
