Grenades
« on: September 16, 2011, 01:52:30 PM »
Parachute guys, drivers of M-3's, drivers of Jeeps, LVT's......... ect ....if they could only throw some hand grenades or German stick grenades.
That would add some fun to the GV'ers in AH for sure. I could see more guys driving Jeeps if they could make some special deliveries  LOL.

Ok, first of all, all a grenade would do to any GV (cept a Jeep) is make it mad. The American Hand Grenade was a fragmentation grenade which had absolutely not enough power to punch through armor unless thrown into the hatch of a tank. May penetrate the Armor of an M3 or Jeep, I take that back. The German Potato Masher (Stielhandgrenate(mis)) had hardly any metal on it and was used for its "shock" effect. The Germans could throw it and follow almost right on its 6 to assault their objective while the Americans basically had to find cover or run as soon as they tossed theirs....soooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooo -10

A thermite or phosphorus grenade might do a little more than make em mad.  Still wouldn't want to use one

Have seen phosphorus and thermite grenades in action...yes, they would do some damage IF you were able to toss it directly above the engine compartment or where the ammo storage was. And yes, a grenade MIGHT track tank if it lands directly in the tread and wedges itself in the bogey wheels or tread. End of story. Watched a thermite test on a Jeeps engine block and still took a good 3-5 min to burn all the way through, by which time youd be dead and the tank crew would be either climbing out or laughing, depends where ya tossed it.

Reading the wiki article, the Brits developed a rifle launched AT shaped charge grenade the No 68 AT in 1940
which was capable of penetrating 2 inches or 50mm of armor.  Be a pretty tough tank crew laughing at one of those.

When I come to think of it, the Panzerfaust is just a large No 68....and I KNOW no tank crew was laughing
at one of those.

Ok, thought we were talking about "Hand Grenades." Thats where this thread was going. Now, I KNOW just what the Panzerfaust is capable of and don't care what they say about the British "RPG". The PIAT was also a British shaped charge launcher that met with only modest success. Lightly armored Vehicle would be dead for sure but even the American Bazooka wasn't feared by Tank crews as the distance it had to be fired from was so close that it meant almost certain death for those who were given the task of firing it in any other situation besides an Ambush. Now, I know WIKI is all knowing but I have seen many shape charges while serving the US of A. Even built em outta Champaign Bottles and those were more potent than most of the AT weapons of WW2. More to follow...

You could always throw a grenade in the map room before releasing troops.
