Response time is the time in milliseconds it takes for the individual pixels to react to change. The higher the response time the more "ghosting" you'll get. Generally 16 or less milliseconds is acceptable for gaming.

Also make sure your LCD monitor has a good contrast ratio. 1:400 or 1:500 is ok.

Thanks mate! The contrast ratio on the one I'm checking out is 1:700 is higher better?

In regards to 'LCD vs. CRT' being better, it's really hard to answer.  With resolution and brightness, CRTs are still slightly ahead on average, but with regards to size (how much desk do you get?  How far can you sit from monitor?), temperature, eyestrain, and lots of otyher stuff, LCD pulls ahead.

Before asking which one is better, specify what you want in a monitor.  Otherwise it's like asking 'What's better, a car or a motorcycle?"

Yes, higher is better, but anything over 1:500 would only matter if you do professional photo editing or some such.

I don't think CRT monitors have anything on LCDs no more. Not even in price these days. The only thing would be refresh rate for the ultra 1337 gamers who need 100+ fps in 1st person shooters. For us regular mortals 75 Hz (max 75 fps) is more than enough.

On LCD monitors this is as simple as it gets.

600:1 contrast or better and anything under 16ms will do you justice!

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 910MP with a built in tv tuner & 8ms response rate. It's great for gaming.
