Hehe, Sebastian, I knew what  you meant, just ribbing ya alittle  ...There are Pony heads, then there are us who love them all (that accounts for about 80% of the flight simmers that enjoy WW2 I would venture to guess)

I wouldn't worry about the US market making or breaking Il-2.  The game will be available in Europe as well.  A good European market could keep this game alive without too much trouble.  Having said that, I do think Il-2 will make out very well in the USA.  If you've ever tried FA2, you'll note that one of the biggest player nations there is SU - Soviet Union.  My guess is the younger American crowd feels quite different from the older American crowd, so to speak.

Am really stoked about the VVS planes that will initially be available, because 5 GIAP used both the MiG-3 and LaGG-3 before their transition to the La-5.  And from what I heard the La-5FN will be added-on fairly soon after initial release!  The one 'stretch' of realism that 5 GIAP will have to make is flying the P-39, but I've always loved that 37mm

Are you gonna fly the I-16 too when it becomes flyable?

Snefens,

It doesn't take higher alt to beat a 109 - heh heh heh(invoking bragging right)

Sure, we'll fly the Ishak too. I just don't know when Oleg will add it on, but I really want to fly it.  It was such a maeuverable plane, and climbed better than a 109E at low alt

Oh, BTW, did you know I-16 had two drop tanks?!?

I-16... hmmm

2xI-16 + TB-3 = SPB "Zveno"

I think Il-2 should be able to do this, if they can have the He 111Z towing a Gigant.

I looked at the picture with the clearing surrounded by trees..

Why are the shadows pointing in all sorts of directions?

The fact that there will be missing a bunch of the "classic" warbirds in an eastern war sim might very well be one of the big reasons it has taken so long before we finally will see one.

Hmmm actually the eastern front had a lot of figters from all over the world gathered in the sovjet wars against both Finland and Germany.

USSR received a huge amount of lendlease planes from the West:

Hurricanes, Spitfires, P38s, P39s, P40s and P51s. All these planes except the P51 were received in very high numbers.

Its only natural that Oleg wants to model the russian designed planes first, but it could have been a wise move to model some of the western planes too.

I just hope ti has a flying "feel" to it, as simple as it sounds that is a thing very few engines can replicate, I cannot explain it relly but anyone that has played Janes WW2 fighters knows what i am talking about.

I tried dust some numbers of lend-lease planes up. Found the following numbers. They might be a little off:

Hurricane Mk II ~ 2900
Spitfire Mk V ~ 140
Spitfire Mk IX ~ 1200
P-38, only few for trials.
P-39 (N and Q) ~ 4900
P-40 ~ 2400
P-47 ~ 200
P-51, only few for trials.

Hurricane was pretty much considered obsolete almost at arrival. The spits primary being used for Air-Defence of Moscow, not much at the front where the game mostly takes place.
They already got three versions of the P39 in the game, but if you are to look at the historic use of the planes I would almost say that the P-40 is a more correct choice for next plane.
This can off course be overruled by the increased interest the game would get if the Spitfires where to be included instead.

<edit> this post is entirely different from my first as I misunderstood the question.

The game takes place on several maps of about 300x200km. Those are:

Kursk
Smolensk
Cuban
Crimea
Berlin
Balaton (lake by Budapest)
Lvov
Moscow
Stalingrad

Screenshots were posted of the maps. I'll see if I can find them.

Ok, I found them. http://www.dogfighter.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000224.html

We are working on also getting a Karelian map into the sim.

Snefens,
Why would you say P-40 is a "more correct choice for the game?"  P-40 was used mainly on the Karelian front whereas the P-39 saw combat throughout the Russian front.  Also, just take a look at the Soviet aces, and you'll see just how well they used the P-39.

BTW, many Soviet P-40s were modified by using the Klimov engine, rather than the Allison.
