Router Hops
« on: August 24, 2005, 12:31:21 PM »
Skuzzy,

When I first started the game my number of hops to the game server was 11. My average round trip was 63. This was almost 3 years ago.

Over time, as can be expected, the companies hosting the infrastructure will make changes. Now my packets traverse 14 hops, but I still have an average round trip of 63. Aside from errors I see once in awhile through pingplotter. I accept those will impact my game performance. How does the number of hops affect game performance?

This is like the old joke that voters are harsher to their beer brewer if he has an outage, than their politicians after raising their taxes. Death and taxes are certain but, fun and sex is only now.

Each hop is just a potential point of failure and a little more latency.

Of course, the routers being used today add 1/3 to 1/2 the latency they did 3 years ago.
