Man's best friend - some stories
« on: December 12, 2000, 10:51:00 AM »
A recent thread has prompted me to start this one.

It seems there are several dog owners in the club.  How about some stories from you guys.

Something like this:

My first dog (mine.. not my families) was/is Buster.  He is half Border Collie, half Springer Spaniel and half Australian Sheepdog.  He weighs about 85 pounds.

I got him at the Oregon Humane Society.  He was part of a litter that had been birthed at the OHS and they were giving the puppies away.

At the time I got the dog, my wife's schedule and mine were somewhat hectic.  She would get up for work and put Buster outside to do his buisness.  He got the hang of it pretty quick, but had difficulty waiting for me to get up (I worked a night shift) before having an accident in the house.  As a result, we'd keep him in the kitchen with papers out.  Messes are much easier to clean up on lanoleum.

One morning, after my wife had left for work.. I heard a loud crash come from the kitchen.  I jumped out of bed to see what it was and caught my little toe on the leg of the dresser and broke it instantly.. tearing off the the toenail in the process.  The scream could be heard across town I am sure.

As I limped into the kitchen dripping blood across the carpet... murderous thoughts were on my mind.  I got to the blocked entrance and saw my little puppy sitting in the corner of the kitchen shaking.  Either the sound of the step-ladder crashing to the ground or the yell that followed 5 second later had scared the poor thing to death.  My heart almost melted when I saw the look in his eyes.

I picked him up and carried him into the bathroom and comforted him until he stopped shaking.  I taped up and bandaged my toe then spent some more time with the dog.

BTW.. I can beat this story... but lets see if someone else can do it first.

My dog is very intelligent. If we have food on a table out of his reach, he will repeatedly bang his head against the bottom of the table til it falls down.

Then, while wagging his tail, he'll carry his catch out in front of me and proceed to wag his tale while I try to scold him.

Heh that dog is too cool though.

When we got our female German Shepard... we were showering her with affection.  When we slowed down... she immediately rolled over spread-eagle on her back and whined for more affection.

I looked down at her and said "That's no way for a girl to go through life."  My wife laughed for 3 days.

One night, about nine years ago, I was looking for a dog at the local Humane Society. A woman brought this cute, little 2 month old puppy in. She had just saw someone drop it out of a car.

I walked over to take a look, and it came over to me, curled up in my arms and went to sleep. I said to the people there "I guess this one's taking me home tonight".

She's been my loyal companion ever since. In those nine years, she's had to get used to having a woman take over the spot next to me in bed, and get used to a little humanoid chasing her around the house shouting "Puppy! Puppy!"

The most "interesting" thing that has happened to us, though, was when in 1994 my car was broadsided by a semi. After the impact and the following spinning stopped(we were on ice), she jumped past me out the driver's door window, which had disappeared in the collision. I tried to catch her leash, but my left arm was severly broken and I couldn't get it in time with my right arm. Since we were on a busy eight-lane freeway, I assumed that she was lying out on the road dead somewhere.

A man came running up to me to ask me if I was alright, and the first thing out of my mouth was "Can you get my dog, please? She went that way!" He took off, and I unbuckled my seat belt and managed to crawl out of the mangled wreck. I remember standing there, groggy, when I spotted her off to my right, towing the guy behind her on the leash. She had somehow crossed four lanes of traffic without getting hit, and he found her walking along the roadside.

We were both very lucky to survive that accident, and she was uninjured(wish I could've said the same for myself). I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for her because of all we've been through together.

Thanks for the thread.

At the time, we had two dogs.  Both would bark if left outside, so we had to keep them inside for a stretch during the day.

The downside to two dogs is trying to figure out who is doing what while you are away.  A shoe is chewed up... both look guilty.  The garbage is removed from below the sink.. both look guilty.

One day I arrived home to find a bic pen chewed up on the carpet with blue ink in a 4" spot nearby.  I was furious.  I called for the dogs... both came running.  Hobo entered the room first and knew there was going to be trouble.  Buster came in second... his chest and his mouth all covered with blue ink.  Sometimes its just impossible to be stern with a straight face.

I dont have a dog, but I have a Ferrit.  Ferrits are very odd critters, they act kinda like a dog/cat, accept mine is so spoiled he will only eat his food if it is heated, and he likes Dr. pepper but too much will turn him into a hispano diahreea cannon (much of anything will do that to a ferrit), oh well just had to add 2 bits.

How about one from the "other side".

My wife came home yesterday and found that one of the dogs had pulled the coffee can off of the shelf, removed the lid and then comenced eating all of the coffee (most likely with some help on the eating part).  The can was nearly full when they started.

One of the dogs promptly threw up coffee grounds onto the carpet.  My wife came home to discover that.  Cleaned it up and fed the dogs.

When I got home an hour later, she told me what had happened then noticed that she had "missed a spot" where the dogs had thrown up again.  She went about cleaning it up and I went to the bathroom.  Just a few minutes later, I came out and noticed that the dog had thrown up again.  I put them outside immediately...

As I went to start cleaning up the third spot, I looked around and noticed that the dogs had thrown up 5 more times since I was in the bathroom.  Now, it contained their dinner and coffee grounds.

I don't know if all 3 participated in the act, but one of the dogs was the primary instigator and feaster... I could tell because he was pacing for 3 hours straight when we brought them back in.  When we went to sleep, he hopped on the bed (a no-no for them) and layed at attention on our feet waiting for sleep to take over.  Don't know that he got a wink of it that night.

By far and away, one of the wierdest experiences I've had with the beasts.

I've had german shepherd, who was quite smartassed one

Once she had overstressed her legs and was restless because of it and doing some runs around the living room, until I called her to get on the bed and I did massage legs for little while, which after she werent restless anymore (the 'pain' left?)

thats not the actual part of my story yet, but that what happend a week later.
As we didn't had let her on that bed, she thought that maybe there would be another chance if she ACTS that same thing what happend week earlier.
She ran around living room - poorly acting and forgot to be restless when still...   me and my mother both laughed and she was just staring at us foolishly that what did she do wrong
