No, the P-38 will not enter into compressability below 20,000ft.  However, like other planes, it will experience buffeting from high speeds that will make the controls sluggish and at too high of a speed unresponsive because the forces needed to move the stick are too great because of the airflow over the wings.  This is not compressability, although a lot make that mistake and confuse the two.  Decreasing throttle and using rudders is enough to get you out of a buffet and you'll soon figure out how to maintain a dive up to 500mph and retain control.

I like the J more for low level dive bombing and in real life it was better.  Yea, the L has dive brakes, but they aren't that great and only used as a last resort.

In real life, the L model was the best of all of the P-38s.

The P-38L had dive flaps, not dive brakes.  The intent of the dive flaps was not to increase drag to slow the plane down but to change the air flow over the wings and give the P-38 positive lift to aid in dive recovery.  The dive flaps were even used by some pilots as a high speed combat flap to aid them in high speed turns but had to be retracted as soon as the turn was complete otherwise they'd bleed off too much E.  And the dive flaps were not used as a last resort.  They were also effective in real life and they are also effective in AH.

Thanks for the replies ppl especially Ack Ack, Yours was the sort of specific info I was hoping for.

I took the 38L for a few spins today I got 2 kills and 2 deaths not bad for a plane I rarely fly.

The buffet at 500 was not expected and I was worried it would break-up.

I got a kill on a Spit V (I think it was a Spit V) in a turn fight. I did not expect the 38 to manage that either.

I normally fly the P47 for Jabo but it just doesn't handle like the 38 once the ORD is gone and the 38 feels like it climbs a lot better,

My only gripe is the instruments, I am finding it hard to get a good view, But I guess you cant have it all

I think I will be using the 38 a lot more often.

Thanks for the link ACK ACK, I will check out the films and info from the 479th

Later Guys, Thanks again

Teh PW-38 pwns in the pilot wound area. No other plane is even close.

Actually, the Ki-84 is also quite serious in pilot wounds.

usually safer to fly under them since they are pretty passive for the most part in their attempts to boom ya and dont want to lose too much off their all important alt..

My experience is the same TW9. There are exceptions like Dan and Corky who are nearly always down in the weeds furballing with the 38, but the large majority are not a threat since I dont fly at their typical fighting alt.

I fly my 38 at 10k or less most of the time.  The only time I go higher is when I'm escorting bombers.  Then the fun begins when two or three try to move with me that high.

Ya.. think most of us level off at 10 or 12k, unless we are flying with odds highly against us, or people are b&z'n us.

mussie cant open a can of fosters let alone fly a 38 mate.

To be dinkum with ya, he is no more than a jakeroo with his knackers in a bunch.

Mussie is a Grouse of a friend but he is in the dunny when it comes to the 38, but not to be a Raw Prawn, but im sure he will give it a fair go.

To be blunt, he is no more than a kid with his panties in a bunch.

Mussie is a great friend but he is in the bathroom when it comes to the P38, but no newb, I'm sure he will give it a good try.

That's the best I could do with the translation, not sure about a few of those Aussie terms.

Mossie falls apart no matter where you hit it.
