And say thank you.

The IFF raised $21 MILLION for Jerry's kids. God Bless them.

They topped the Harley company, dealers, and owners, who at last count were up around $5 million.

God has blessed me with two healthy children. I know I don't do enough to give back. I hope to change that in this coming year.

Small town firefighter here

Main fundraiser organisers here is the "Southern Illinois Coal Belt Assn." Most of their fundraisers deal with helping families with their loss of home due to fire. We help out whenever we can and try to stick together during times of need.

MDA  drive is a major deal with us. I am shocked at times when I see the amounts some departments raise.

Side note, the mayor of Dallas(Laura Miller) will no longer let Dallas FD do the traditional task of the "Fill the Boot" at intersections in Dallas. She had a "panhandleing" law pushed through to rid the streets of cardboard sign carrying beggars pulling in $400 a day. Fine, good idea. But she refuses to issue a speacial permit for the fire dept to collect for the MDA drive. Got to love a politician:aok (sorry for the rant:D )

No need to apologize, it's a good example of political stupidity. It isn't the only place its happened either. You know, you've got to be a pretty sorry POS to stop firefighters from doing that. But it happens.

I went to school and was in the Boy Scouts with a boy with MD. He was a "red blanket case" a couple of times, and Jerry came to see him both times. He lived, and went on to graduate and make Eagle Scout, got his award on a gurney. He was still around a few years after school, I saw him on the local Telethon coverage after he raised a lot of money several times. I lost track of him, I'd say he's likely gone now.

Those kids are so grateful for what people do for them. I built vans for some of them a few years ago. The pay wasn't that great, but putting them in a van of their own that they could drive was a really big reward. They always wanted to know how they could thank me enough. I told them to "wear this one out completely so I can build you another one". The company is gone now, bought out by a bigger place from Atlanta.

Well, I guess that is one way to look at it.
After doing a biker rally benefit for a kid with cancer and his family we found out quicly that the best method for individual donations was through collection jars placed near cash registers of stores. Nearly everyone that made purchases donated something.
It also had an extra benefit that at jar gathering time the businesses usualy made a sizeable donation themselves.
If you placed on the jar that it was an FD promoted drive I`m sure it would double donations.
IMHO, Dallas has more than enough problems at intersections. Add that to the fact that there is always someone, sitting at the light after it has went green either digging in their pockets or looking for a purse, wallet, etc while traffic piles up. Have witnessed some pretty good pile ups while Gomette dug around for her purse and Homer wasn`t paying attention and plowed into the rear of the car in front of him.

The "Fill the Boot" campaign tends to generate quite a bit of money. Tens of thousands of dollars. The guys guys do a damn good job of collecting money without impeding taffic. Im not saying you dont have a point, its just more effective then just relying on collection jars.

Yea, i agree that it is a great campaign and also a very effective one for a good cause.
It is not the Fire fighters who "impede" traffic. It is the everyday, average moron BS`n around and blocking intersections.
Dallas doesn`t have a great rep for traffic flow under normal circumstances.
I beleive it would be a lot safer to do in shopping parking lots, etc instead of at intersections.

Maybe so. Just seems like she could give a rats bellybutton either way.

And I agree ,D/FW traffic is awful. A monkey could have come up with a better plan for congestion. I avoid going down 35E from Denton if at all possible. 35W is bad enough these days. I really dont know how people drive it everyday. Deton is a nightmare to get around in these days. I swear it wasnt like this 5 years ago up here.

And as far as bad drivers go, thats what I convinced will get me killed on the job. Give me a house fire anyday. Just keep me off the damn freeways.

Slash I live in Alrington but here the horror story's about Loa Miller and her tyrant rule over Dallas, omg I hate her. Wheres a crazed assasin when you need 1. What really pisses me off about her is her smoking law, just because she quit smoking she thinks that everybody should, and that we shouldn't be able to smoke in a restaunt or bar for that matter, and that panhandling law is just retarded, I'm wondering when all the Dallas cops and firemen are going to get together and lynch her... I don't think theres a judge in TX that will convict ya'll

to all Police and Firemen

yeah Slash 35W going to Denton is a mess, around 5 oclock traffic is backed up to Oklahoma it seems like, its crazy. I moved down here 15 years ago and that Fort Worth I35 mixmaster area has been under construction the whole time... They will have the "high 5" completed in Dallas before the Fort Worth fiasco is done. I'm in sales and have to travel DFW area all day every day, its a pain i'm telling ya, gotta learn the side streets and shortcuts and whats bad is theres not allot of them lol, have you seen bush's big plan, he's goin to build another highway running parralel with I35W and I30 lol   I'm sure it will be a toll road just like everything in North Dallas area, jeeze when did that place turn into New Jersey

the fill the boot campaign did raise allot of money, I can't believe she was able to block it, its not like you guys were sitting out in the middle of the highway asking for money, yall are at intesections by malls and places like that where traffic is usually slow and blocked anyways. I used to always give them money and would always empty out my change drawer for them... I think she's getting some money from all the refuge centers and homeless centers that haven't been seeing allot of use, its the only way I can see that she could have a charity blocked... I just don't get it, its not like ya'll were keeping that money for yourselves and buying booze with it lol... I just don't understand how she still has a job and why the local news ain't on her arse every second of every day
