YAK Attack
« on: September 13, 2005, 04:06:51 PM »
Just would like to give everyone an I idea on what I have found out about the Yak after Flynn it for ½ of the camp. I love to fly something different and get to know its advantages and weakness of each aircraft. The yak was always a plane that scared me when one popped up in my view so I decided to fly it for one camp.
The yak in general is a beast and I can say one of the best co-alt 1v1 fighters in the game. Strong speed and climb make this aircraft better than most late war birds that were in the air. I use it in almost like a spit get on their 6 and hold on. The yak can turn very well and can take some hits but you always have the option to extend and start over. At low speeds you can keep the nose up with almost no airspeed. Don’t use the yak as a BZ fight because of one issue it does have THE GUNS. This is a plane that if you can land 5 kills that’s a great run. The cannon is so slow cycling that you could be lined up fire one in front of their nose and the second shot is way behind your target. Most of my kills are d200 and in, but with the yak it’s not that hard to get that close. I find myself holding off the trigger more to conserve ammo but if it’s a real 1v1 get out of the way.  So if you see a rook yak beware.

Also on a side note I will be rewarding myself next camp with an all tempest month (:

So you flew the Yak9T, not the U in this case?  Either are great birds.  One neat thing about the 37mm (aside from it being fluff'n huge) is the muzzle velocity.  It's quite the laser if you've got the dexterity - long range shots are very possible, the high speed of the rounds require less lead for your target - don't be shy with it.

Yak is fine plane if you're not a spray & pray merchant.

However, can anyone tell me why the view out the back of cockpit is better than the front?
Fiendish Soviet trick or rush to hit 3 year plan targets resulted in canopies attached wrong way round?
Soviet pilots spent more time checking their 6?
Answers on postcard please.

well about the back view, its quite usefull when you are getting ganged by 109's :)

and about the guns, remember the no gondolas 109's have about the same thing.

and one other thing, Yak's and LA's did have DT's in some versions...we need em here ! cause with a fuel rate of 2.0 you can't use those planes to attack distant airfields, wich is not fuuuuun :(

2 30's =/= 1 37 (spud).  The Yak 9t is a great plane.  It's always so satisfying to see that potatoe fly out, hit something and cause a HUGE explosion.

I just wish we had the Yak9k.  45mm of yummy goodness.

Whisky58--

Actually, I've read that one of the weaknesses of Soviet pilots was that they didn't look around enough.

I agree Noir, If yak had DT it would be my secondary fighter.  Well, I guess the 3 38's we have do the job quite well though. ;)

Man did I have some great fights last night with the YAK. For a couple of hours the 9t was my ride. This was my first time to fly the T for a night and that gun is something. Each pass was one our two shots and started to get the feel for it. Then later on in the night jb 42 and 12 showed their faces so I hoped in my 9u for some friendly dog fighting. I think that this ride is going to be my head hunting tool our my special weapon when I am P,Oed.

Try coming from a high angle, the shoot is harder but the turret will pop of the tank :)
