Navy Jet Crashes in Jacksonville, Fla.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A Navy jet crashed into a park near Jacksonville Naval Air Station on Wednesday, but there was no immediate word on the crew's fate.

The S-3 Viking went down about noon in Westside Regional Park. It crashed as it was coming in to land, and ended up across a highway from the landing strip, said Bill Dougherty, a Navy spokesman.

The Navy said two parachutes were seen before the crash and a search was being conducted for the crew. The S-3 Viking is a carrier-based jet that can carry a crew of four. It was not clear how many people were aboard or if anyone on the ground was injured.

The jet was part of Sea Control Squadron 32, also known as the Maulers, at Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

Went to jacksonville.com and checked out the photo gallery. Of course in the midst of tragedy there just had to be one female dog holding up a sign "This is why I don't want you over my house"

Jacksonville is getting Cecil Field back sooner or later, I hope the first one that has to ditch, ditches in people like that's houses.

Shouldn't have moved out to the Brannan-Field Chaffe exchenge, even though the Navy is gone, it's still close to an active airfield.

A 14-year old military re-enactor and flight simulator enthusiast was arrested for trying to scavenge a control column from the wreckage of this afternoons plane crash. The parents were unavailable for comment.

Wait...I saw the interview with that witness on the news...the exact word was KABOOM.  In fact BIG KABOOM.

what makes you say lightning?  

Lightning strikes are routine events that aircraft suffer all the time.  

Engine malufunction?  In case youa re not aware, the S3 has two, so the cases of a total failure of both seem unlikely as well.

Too guess at this point is rediculous.  God Bless the pilots and any other souls on board.

Not if its one of the biguns, um sprites. They'll blow an aircraft apart, theres been a few recorded instances and some theorized instances.
