Getting myself heard (using F12)!
« on: September 07, 2005, 06:05:37 AM »
Hi People! Hope someone can help the newbie.
I'm trying to get my head around using my mic for the radio. I've set it up OK and have followed the instructions on the help section of this web site, tuned the radio to myself, pressed T and successfully broadcast etc but my problem seems to start when I get in a plane or any vehicle. I don't appear in the right hand list (F12) and can't use my mic radio - pressing F12. However when I'm in the tower or the hanger, I can. It's only when I jump into the cockpit that I become incommunicado (only works when I press "T").
Can anyone help?...Please?

when you are in flight you do NOT show up on range in that box thingy,  Try pressing f12 and saying something like "com check".  If someone else says 5by5 then ur golden.

Hi and welcome to Aces High!

You can transmit/receive voice (vox) two ways Mic Channel and Mic Range. Mic Channel allows you to communicate verbally with those others tuned to a speciific radio channel. For instance, on your radio text bar, type 160 into the last entry box on the right, which is marked with a V. By activating the Mic Channel key (we'll get to that in a sec) you can speak with anyone else tuned to ch 160 (within your country) You also have the options of typing anyone's CPID into that box, same country or not, and speaking one on one with them. My cpid is dmdmax (Knight). If your flying Bishop, you can speak to me by typing dmdmax into the radio V box and activating your mic channel key.

Mic range allows you to speak to other countrymen within a range of 5 miles +/- That all said, let's get you set-up.

Open your clipboard, click CONTROLS and then click KEYBOARD MAP. Highlight the GLOBAL button on the bottom left. Scroll down the list of options till you come to Mic Range. Click on it to highlight it. Now use the cursor to click on the F11 key on the keyboard. Click on the SET KEY button. Now scroll down to Mic Channel and select the F12 key. Click on SET KEY and then click on OK.
You are now set to talk on channel or range by depressing the F11 or F12 keyboard keys.

One final tweak, if you have unassigned control buttons on your joystick or throttle, you can use the joystick setup to activate the mic transmit buttons (F11+F12) I'll be happy to walk you through that step once you have your range and channel mic keys set and working.

Sorry if I made that more complicated than it needs to be :)

One additional note on Range/Room channel. If your in the tower you can't transmit to people in flight and vice versa. When on ground, in the Tower or Hanger, it switches to a Room channel and only people in the room you are in will hear you.
A quick way to check your volume and how you sound is to do a
.radio 5 [your gameID] and transmit to yourself using the t key. You will transmit to yourself and hear how you sound, it will have an echo effect.

Thanks very much, all of you!
It's great to get such friendly and helpful advice. Some forums seem to be inhabitited by people who use requests for help as excuses to try and put down the guy who needs the help, calling them stoopid etc. Not here, I'm glad say.
Excellent!Community spirit.

One side note KD, previous flight sim experience notwithstanding, Aces High is a lotta fun but has a pretty steep learning curve. You would do well to post a seperate request here in the Help & Training forum for a trainer. They're limited in number but all excellent.
