If you get a chance to watch the replay, notice this, I just did...

The front wheels come down left of the lines, and you'll see white smoke coming from them. The pilot does a small correction, and then the front wheels align with and come into contact with the lines and BOOM, massive flames erupt shooting down the belly of the plane.

During the spaces between the lines, it goes back to white smoke, but just as soon as it hits a line the whole thing catches on fire again.

So it goes: smoke, fire, smoke, fire, smoke, fire.... as the plane skips along the dashed white lines of the runway.

Basically... The wheels etc. didn't catch fire - the runway did.

Maybe there's a better choice of paint out there perhaps?

Haha seriously?  Yahoo reported that the rear wheels seemed to be in normal position.  Could it be possible that Airbus makes rear tires that move?  Or perhaps they were talking about the gear being up/down.  Either way it's the second bit of misinformation in 2 days of online articles, the first was yesterday when a website said we could MAKE crude oil:rolleyes:

I'm betting that the metal coming off the wheels was hot enough to ignite whatever paint they use.

You get a look at the wheels when it came to a stop? Looked like 2/3 to 3/4 were just ground off.

I'd be a safe bet that the wheel is made of magnesium which burns quite impressively.

Granted, I know diddly about airplane wheels, but I would think that they would make a better choice of material than magnesium. Simply because it does burn. I understand the strength to weight ratio advantage over many other materials, but propensity to ignite is not a favorable trait on an airplane.

Yeah yeah yeah, jet fuel and all that.

My high school summer job was filling airplanes with fuel at the local FBO.

The owner of the FBO flew Mohawks in Vietnam.  He once made a landing on a tactical runway that was made of that  perforated steel decking.  He popped a tire on roll out and the wheel ignnited.  The plane pulled hard to the dragging side and he kept it on the runway until the speed was quite slow.

At the last moment the ignited main rolled off the runway and was buried in soft sand.  He said the witness thought he did it on purpose to douse the fire.

Yep. spotted that.. definitely the runway paint was REALLY flaming up.

not good.

It could be that the different surface texture of the striped portion of the runway caused the wheel to flare up more too, kind of like how you stir up a fire with a poker.  The runway paint itself didn't appear to actually catch fire..

The way I saw it the nose wheels were in a 90 degree angle on contact with the runway - and stayed in that position. The flames where when the tyres/rims disentegrated and the front gear was in contact with the rwy.
Considering how major Rwys are cut, and the way Rwys are (in general) painted I find it extremely unlikely it was the paint that was on fire...however the flames intially did seem to surge brighter at first..perhaps contact with centre line lights?

was listening to some other pilots discuss this last night and they said is was a miracle that the front wheel assembly stayed on. They say its designed to shear off under stress, they were saying that the split second that the front wheel hits the ground it would come off... I thought it was amazing the ammount of control those pilots had over that thing when landing...

It's used because it's strong and light. I'm not sure if commercial aircraft use them but military do (or did when i was in so long ago). It does burn very impressively, so impresively that when they would catch fire on the old JFK mechs would just get them off the struts and roll them off the side of the ship. It was to much trouble to try an put them out. It looked really cool as they would keep burning while sinking into the ocean.
