"One Laptop Per Child", is in discussions with five countries--Brazil, China, Thailand, Egypt and South Africa--to distribute up to 15 million test systems to children.

How about "3 meals a day per child" or "clean running water per child"?  It seems to me that $100 could be put to better use.

Give a kid food, he'll eat a meal.

Give a kid a computer, he'll game forever (or until he has to upgrade).

I have a garage full of $100 computers, $25 computers even!

I remember Negroponte from his column in Wired. Those were funny times -- mid to late 1990s -- when we were on the verge of a "new economy" and the .com bubble was only a dream (held by a handful of rational people with common sense). I still have a selection of those magazines I saved specifically because of the "pie-in-the-sky" optimism.

As a side note, I think this type of thing will take hold in this country as well, replacing textbooks with CDs or floppys, it will take time and some people won't come into the future without kicking and screaming.

I think in the future, it will replace the newspapers as well... instead of a rolled paper bundle, you'll get a cd instead that has video (or at least links to them) and has some type of speech capability for the blind. Instead of recycling papers, you'll end up putting the CD into your newpaper box after reading/viewing instead.

I don't think so... until you can roll up a CD and stick it in your back pocket when you take a crap, Newspapers will be around for along time.

No, once I2 in in place there will be no need to information to be distributed on hard media. Everything will come over the wire, news, video, movies, music at speeds far faster than we have now.

When this will happen I have no idea. The Media industry, i.e. Movies and Music are already pitching a fit over I2 networks setup in colleges being used for file sharing.

I am of the opinion they should be already.
Have you picked up your kids bookbag lately?
They didnt carry that much weight on their backs in the normandy invasion LOL

Seriously though. the weight has gotten to be rediculous.
Couple of years ago one of my sons teachers decided to start putting assignments and reading material on the Net as opposed to using the textbooks. Even let them Email her their homework assignments.
Worked great

Yup but I think I'll stay with Palm OS for now. From what I've seen of Windows Mobile its very disjointed as far as the phone side of things go. Maybe version 5 will be better who knows. I do understand why Palm are doing what they do - I see a lot of people who use Windows mobile simply to interface back to exchange and like the comfort zone it applies.

I'm thinking I wouldn't mind a Treo 650 (the new 700's screen res is actually lower than the 650's) but all my accessories are 600 based. What will swing me is if someone gets the video out port going so you could feed out video feeds (the 650's connector has a vid out apparently). Combined that with one of those low end Innovatek Video Headsets (US$120) and a 2Gb SD card = great personal video player.
