Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am proud to announce our next Aces High Scenario, "Fire over Malta".
The beginning of 1942 saw intense aerial action in the skies over the tiny island of Malta.
The besieged British Island was starting to feel the brunt of a offensive that could of spelled disaster for the Allies in North Africa.
Convoys of Allied ships destined for Malta were almost defenseless as they made thier way through the Mediterranean. They faced attack from land and sea, So dangerous capital ships were kept at a safe distance, and the smaller warships escorted the merchant ships the rest of the way to Malta.
The Regia Aeronautica and Luftwaffe pounded Malta, making it the most bombed place in World War II. Night and day, they attacked, and the British were suffering huge losses among thier pilots. New Aircraft and Pilots had to be ferried from ship to shore. These pilots most of the green and never have flown from a Carrier, launched from North of Tunisia destined for Malta.
In Janurary of 1942, The first Spitfires flew from the HMS Eagle. Unfortunatley most of these were written off before the Eagle could return. 2 months later, and numerous trips later, the USS Wasp ferried nearly triple the amount of Spitfires the Eagle could carry.
The tide was beginning to turn, but the end was still far off. Malta would continue to be harassed for most of 1942. But slowly the RAF regained control of the air, and Rommel's Afrika Korps were starved from RAF interdiction raids on thier previously unmolested shipping. The destruction of the German sixth army at Stalingrad would spell the beginning of the end for the Axis, not long after the Allies would land in Sicily.
