Not sure what game you were watching but the Philly game was all hitting on the boards.

Maybe if you compare it to the Euro leagues.

Watched the Minnesota Wild game last night.  Kinda liked the look of it myself.  of course the Wild winning didn't hurt :)

There was still plenty of banging and bumping going on, but it's now a speed game, more like college hockey.

Nah, Euro leagues are all about hooking and interfering.. and defense. With the new rules, once the teams get familiar with them, the NHL could be very entertaining. At least I hope it will be - too bad I can't see any games...

I've never agreed that the rules should change simply because the game is close. The rules define the game.

I think it's too soon to tell what affect the changes will have on the game. For now, I'm just happy to see hockey on television.

Now... as to the reasoning for many of the rules changes. It's a load of crap and they use the same excuse in the NFL. The talking heads say, "The fans like excitement and scoring is exciting." Bull**** I say. Some of the best games I've ever watched ended 1-0. Hell, there's an assload of scoring in basketball, and IMHO it's more boring than even auto racing.

Was at Devils home opener last night, all those rule changes that were made because of the nasty way the devils played in the past seemed to have no effect on the Dev's, they were flying all over the place.  got to agree with Saur a little not once did ya hear a thunderous check into the boards.

And Brodeur will have more assists than ever this year, he looks like farve out there making tape to tape passes at center ice.

And Crosby almost went the way of Lindros, came across the ice head down.  the whole arena saw what was coming Colin White trying out his Scott Stevens impersonation, Crosby looked up at the very last second or he would of been crushed.

Go Dev's

What you're forgetting is that the game has changed greatly in the last ten years.  Scoring is way down.  A lot of it is due to the refs being out of control, making calls based on the game situtation rather than the rules.  Passing, skating, shooting, and hitting are fun to watch.  Hooking, clutching, grabbing, are not.  Reform is long overdue.

What he said.

The 10 percent of the population that enjoyed what the NHL had become had thier try, now they are going to try enforcing the rules of the game and see if they can turn it into a succesful sport.

Pongo, while I agree with some of what you said, I also think the changes in the game are detrimental.

I am all for removal of the red line and the enforcement of the "hold and grab" nonsense.  But the rest, INCLUDING the shoot out, is just ghey.

It will take some time for it to really sink in regarding the no tolerance for obstruction style play, but the teams are adapting.

As far as the shootout, well, its either have a shootout or a tie game, neither is a great outcome, but at least now you have a winner. The teams get 3 periods and a 5 min OT period to get a winning goal.

As for it being "basketball", I dont think so. To be a great team you need to be able to pass the puck, and somebody has to be there to receive it on the other end. There is still strategy.

I think overall it looks much more like Olympic speed hockey, and in the long run will be more talent orientated, and interesting. There will still be bumps in the road, and its only been 2 days so far of regular season play...
