Firewall Problems? Please help Skuzzy
« on: October 08, 2005, 02:10:53 PM »
Hi Skuzzy,

I recently installed Spyware and discovered over 1400 trojans and viruses in my system.  I cleaned it out.  Thats the good news.

The bad news:  When I log on to the game, it will give me a message that reads along the lines of "if your running a firewall such as ZoneAlarm you need to ........" something close to that.  Fore example at times I'll log in, here is what happens: It takes 7 seconds to swith bases, my name does not appear on any channel accept on range, takes 5 seconds to launch a plane on a runway, I don't tower in less than 10 seconds, some serious warping issues such as I on someones sixe and within 400 yards that con will warp away from me,  in fact any con close to me will warp somewhere else.  It is just a really unreliable connection and its unplayable.

So I uninstalled my Spyware program but I am still getting the same problems but not as much.   Could you please help me.

Intel Celeron 1.7gz
NVIDIA Geforce MX 4000 (Omega 1.6693) (Q)

You still have some programs (Spyware/malware) running in the background which are acting as primary control programs for the network interface.

When you find that many installed on your computer, it would be wise to go ahead and re-install the OS.  Spyware/malware programs can make and leave a mess on your computer.  Some cannot be removed unless you are in safe mode, and they still may come back.

Thank you Skuzzy,

If I go to Safe Mode, could you give an example on what to look for to uninstall certain programs.  Could I just go to program files and simply delete these folders associated with spyware cleaners, or is it more involved than that.

I am not very savvy with this sort of stuff so I need the 1st graders walk through sort of speak.  This is alo t easier than having to reinstall my OS.

Install a couple of spyware remover tools. Microsoft's own one and Spybot I would suggest.. Go into safe mode (Press f8  repeatedly at start up). Run the spy removal tools two or three times.

There is a risk of removing something vital to your PC, but it's the only way. You could also get a version of Regcleaner (http://www.macecraft.com)  and look for spyware entries in the registry. Again, be CERTAIN they are spyware.

Other than this, I'm afraid a fresh install of Windows is the only way. Back up your data and do it!

Good luck;)

Plasticman, I highly recommend following Skuzzy's advice on this. I do this watermelon for a living and when a machine gets to a state like you saying the only sure way I've found to get rid of the bad stuff is to re-install the OS. You can fight this stuff for days and still not get all the remnants out of your system.

If you system came with recovery CDs, backup all your data you want to keep to CD and re-install fro the recovery CDs. If you don't have recovery CDs you will need your original OS CD, XP, 2000, Win 9x and all your drivers.

I know it sounds like a lot of work but it will save you a lot of headaches in the long run.
