An open letter to the entertainment industry:
« on: September 24, 2001, 12:27:00 PM »
With the recent wave of events, patriotism has once again become the "in" thing.  Singing the National Anthem and "My Country 'Tis of Thee" has become a national pass time.

In the midst of all this, I ask you... the entertainment industry... to remember one thing: These songs touch the hearts of America, not the performers.  Please! ENOUGH WITH PRANCING YET ANOTHER REHASHED PERFORMER UP ON STAGE TO SING WHAT HE OR SHE FEELS TO BE AN EVEN MORE TOUCHING RENDITION OF MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE!

I like the "kinder, gentler" spin being put on us to select a new "national song".

"My Country Tis of Thee?"

"My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died!
Land of the Pilgrim's pride!
From every mountain side,
Let freedom ring!"

"America the Beautiful?"

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Nice songs, nice tunes, nice sentiment.

But I sorta like the National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner.

"O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"

Yeah, that's more the message I'd like to send OBL and his ilk.

We're still here.... and we're coming for you.

...and you're right Deja.. they don't need to embellish it. Just sing it loud and clear.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

What amazes me the most is that without the Band to drown them out most of the "artists" that were singing this weekend can not even carry a tune.
We do not stop playing because we grow old
We grow old because we stop playing

What part wab?  The when she grabbed her crotch or when she spit?

Ah... that's not it really anyways.

It seems that these are songs meant to be sang by the people...not songs intended for half-time mass productions with dancers and singers and all sorts of action to keep us interested.

I'd rather have them singing and waving flags than slamming the current administration which is exactly what they'd be doing if 9/11 had been a regular day...

If it takes some ppl to hear Roseanne Barr belt out the tunes in order for them to feel the patriotic stirrings .. so be it.

I'd rather not see the hypocracy at all.

That reminds me... I wonder what Hanoi Jane is up to during all of this.

President Urges Calm, Restraint Among Nation's Ballad Singers

WASHINGTON, DC— In the wake of the recent national tragedy, President Bush is urging Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, and other singers to resist the urge to record mawkish, insipid all-star tribute ballads. "To America's recording artists, I just want to say, please, there has already been enough suffering," Bush said. "The last thing we need right now is a soaring Barbra Streisand-Brian McKnight duet titled 'One For All.'" Reports that the FBI had confiscated several notebooks and audio tapes from Diane Warren's home could not be confirmed as of press time.
