Ram?
« on: October 11, 2005, 05:24:43 AM »
I have a Soyo MB with P4X400
Upgraded BIOS today.
I've had my system for almost 3 years and just found out that I've been running my ddr400 a 266MHz this whole time:(

I never noticed this because my logo during POST would hide this info from me.  I increased  Dimm speed from 133MHz to 200MHz in bios and instead of 1GB ram, it only reads 750MB?
I think 1 of my sticks won't run at 400 even though they all are PC3200
I have 1 512 and 2 256MB sticks.  Corsair and Kensington?
If I run it at 333mhz (166 in bios, all 1gb register), system reboots 10 seconds after windows loads.
At 400mhz(200 in bios), windows won't load, I get blank screen after POST.
At 266mhz (133 in bios), recently, my system reboots at first after long periods of off state, but then it would not let me load win2000.

I've recently reformatted as well as upgraded from win 2000 pro to XP PRO.
Still same results.

I'm thinking I should find that stick of ram that doesn't run at 400Mhz and take it out as an experiment.

I only have video card installed and all drivers for MB are installed and up to date as well as win xp.

Problem as been around since the past 30 days.
P.S. I bought another MB P4S800D-X ($69) just in case I have too replace MB.

Any suggestions anyone?

I had same problem.  The problem maybe this.  I have 3 slots on my MB, I had 3 filled with 512mb each.  WHen all 3 slots are used on my MB it drops the mhz from ddr400 to ddr200.  I took 1 out and it went back up to 400.  Now I tried swapping the cards but no joy.  I then decided to look in the manuel for the MB and found that when all 3 slots are populated it will drop to 200 regardless of the speed of the ram.  U might have same problem.  In order for me to go over 1gig ram and stay at DDR400 I need to buy 2 1gig ram cards.  Sucks but that the way it is.  My MB is ASUS K8N-E deluxe.

I've heard about this.

I guess I'll go out to Fry's and buy a 512 PC3200 memory stick today and take out the 2 256mb sticks.  That should keep me at 512MB.

MwDogg, did you also have problems of your system not being able to load windows or rebooting by itself?

only if I tried to force the memory to 400 when I had all 3 slots filled.

i dont think that you have a problem exactly. the memory architechture is usualy on the fsb. there is a multiplier that this goes through. i cant explain it here. it would take all day. google your MB and check BBS's. there are also RaS and CaS issues to deal with. you may even have a bullchit update Bios. not all new Bios's are the best. you can always roll it back.
