Boroda,

Hey man I need to ask you a favor.  I'm probobly the last person to ask a favor from you considering our "disagreements"  ;) of the past, BUT...

I feel like a vail of ignorance is being lifted off of my eyes and I'd like to ask you some honest questions for honest answers. I'm starting to look at Russia diferently than I ever had and it feels kinda strange, so I'd like to talk to you if you wouldn't mind.

I can ask you here or by email it's up to you  :)

Udie, you are always welcome!

My e-mail and ICQ UIN are in my UBB profile.

If you think that your questions may be interesting for the public here - just ask them on th UBB, if you think that HTC will not be against it.

About our disagreements: I often post things that I disagree myself, to see the reaction of the intelligent and educated Westerners.

Well basicly I'd like an "update" on the way Russia is today.  To be honest I have never really looked at your country with anything other than "cold war" eyes. I'll just ask some questions  :)

How do your elections work?  Are they similar to ours here with primaries for the parties to select who will run?

You guys have a parliment right? the Duma?  Are there 2 houses like here in the US congress?

What kind of political parties do you have there? Communists? Socialist? Democrats?

Ok,  I konw how I've felt about the Russian government. I've never had bad feelings about the people.  I do still have some aprehension, I feel due to being raised with you guys as the "enemy"  and I know how I still feel about communism.

How does the average Russian feel about America, the government and the people?

Lastly I guess, if you could, would you please give me the "Russian" perspective of Chechnia (sp?).  I've always taken the rebels side, but some of the stuff I've read and seen on tv in the last 2 weeks makes me question my views on that war.

You know, just maybe we could use this tragedy as a way to bring our countries closer together.   Think what could be done if we were friends and worked together instead of against each other....

Well, Udie, so many questions and so little time... I get to y PC for maybe 2 hours in 3 days now  :(

Elections:

We have "democratic" elections. Presidental elections - direct, if anyone gets more then 50% - hes a president, if not - there is a second round for top 2 candidates.

Last time most of the people voted for Putin and were unable to tell why they did...

Parliament (Duma, the "congress") elections are based on personal elections and on wotes for partys. Every party that gets more then 5% gets a quote in Duma. "Senate", or "Federation Counsil" is formed from representatives of the 89 regions of Russia, gouvernors or local Dumas chairmen, or just representatives (Putin doesn't want gouvernors in Senate).

Parties. Main parties on the last elections were:

"Yedinstvo/Medved" ("Unity/Bear"), the Putin's party with no program or creative ideas except for standard "Russia forever we must unite etc ad nauseum".

Communuists: blame everyone, wave red flags, Stalin's portraits, "working class" rethorics with commercial interests behind it. Stealing whatever they are allowed. People who vote for them are loosers, 60+ years old pensioneers and idealistic communists (nice people indeed, somehow like Christians).

Union of Right forces: Young "democrats", extremely pro Western, idealistic and romantic capitalists. Some economical ideasare nice, like lower taxes, but overall ideological platform is incomperhancive to common people. Vote against Chechen war, did so even after terrorist acts in Moscow...

"Yabloko" ("Apple"): party of one man, Gregory Yavlinskiy. A little to the left from Union of the Rights. Yavlinskiy was the man that I voted for president, he got impresive 15% after Putin and Zyuganov, communist leader.

Others are marginals and local minotities.

Let me continue tomorrow... The next part is much more serious. Have to go now. Sorry for "official" answer so far.

Udie,
Thank you for asking these questions.  Not because I'm all "Rah Rah Russia!", but because you took the time to try someone elses shoes, so to speak  :)

It's only time before I shall have to ward off the Sovi...err, "Russian" masses from my porch!

it's winter, the Russian bear is sleeping, but soon it shall try to engulf us all and destroy western civilization.

There'll be a huge shootout as I defend my dump hole (i.e flat) from the vicious commun..err, Russians, with the ground forces led by boroda himself.

They're coming.

I'm gonna vote for free automatic weapons and ammo so we can prepare for the defense against those red arm..err, Russian troops!
