one of the things I miss about living in the NE was that there were movie theaters that played all those old comedy classics every weekend.  I don't believe I have ever laughed harder than when I first saw WC Fields or the Marx Brothers. truly truly comedy genius.

Speaking of WC Feilds I remember hearing a story about whatn he was on his deathbed a visitor found him reading the Bible.
On asking him why he would be reading a Bible now when he wasnt particularly religeous  in life he responded in classic Feilds fashion.

"Im looking for loopholes"

I wonder why did they include all that silly stuff like playing harp. They were great regardless to their musical skills.

Most of the movies made in those days had musical numbers in them.

Far as the Mrx Brothers are concerned. Im not into harp music But Harpo was IMO nothing short of impressive

And Chico was a very good pianist

but then again I was raised with music in my house ranging from Beethoven to ZZTOP
And have been intoduced to evrything from Guilbert & Sullivan to "A Raisen in the Sun"

So I have learned to have an appreciation for just about anything

Musical Numbers -- well, the Marx Brothers were a vaudeville act before going to Hollywood -- their first film, the Cocoanuts is effectively their vaudeville show. Vaudeville had singin' and dancing.

Their early work with Paramount is outstanding. after 1933 though, the Hays office set up shop, and the Marx Bors. moved to MGM. The Hays office brought an end to much of the sexuality they had. Paramount's specialization was musicals -- they were convinced that would bring the female element into the theaters; while the Marx Brothers Paramount films always had singing-and-dancing as an integral element, with MGM the wackiness would compete with a turgid love affair between bland young actors and interminable dance numbers.
