Reusing 3D parts of other Spits to make a Mk VIII
« on: October 19, 2005, 04:07:12 AM »
Ok, unless I am quite mistaken the Mk 8 could be assembled from the 3D parts of the other Spitfires.

Take a the tail of the Mk 16 to use as the tail of the Mk 8 (Mk 14 has an enlarged rudder compared to the Mk 8 as I recall).

Take the fuselage of the Mk 14 from immediately in front of the cockpit to the tail, including the retractable tail wheel.

Take the universal wing of the Mk 9 with the exception that you take the shorter ailerons from the Mk 14.

Take the nose of the Mk 16 from immediately in front of the cockpit forward, including the air intake.

Unless I have missed something, that would be a completely accurate Mk 8 built from reused 3D parts of existing AH Spitfires.  The models may not be able to be broken down and parts recombined that way, but if they can....

Not meaning to sound pushy or like I am trying to tell you how to do your jobs.  I just really want the Mk VIII and if I even have a small chance of suggesting something useful I'll take it.  :)

Dan, Kev, have I missed anything about the Mk VIII in that parts list?

Spit XIV was built off a VIII airframe.  So you are correct about the retractable tail.  The pointed rudder was standard on the XVI but had been introduced with the VIII/XII/VII.  So taking the tall tail would work.  Fuselage and Universal wing of the FIX would work except you'd need the short span ailerons from the XIV, but since the XIV got em from the VIII it's only fair :)

The 3D parts should all be in place to do it.  We've seen them all except the tall tail of the XVI but you've said that ones a given so its there too :)

Either the IX or XVI nose would work since our FIX has the tropical filter.  In retrospect it shouldn't have it to be a 42-43 Spit IX as it wasn't introduced on most ETO Spit IXs until post D-Day when they had to deal with the dust of Normandy.

VIII had that first as it was designated for overseas service in the MTO, CBI and Pac.

Sounds about right -
Take Mk VIII fuselage from the cockpit backwards.
Tall tail would work from the XIV, ditto for the short span ailerons.
Take the XIV wing move the .50 cals outboard of the 20mm, make them stubs.
Take front end off the XVI

Doesn't seem like a lot of work assuming that like other 3d progs individual pieces make up the whole object. Should just be some creative copying required.

I used a similar method to turn a Blackhawk into a Seahawk for FS2004.

Thanks.  I thought I had it, but i wasn't sure that I hadn't forgotten some distinctively Mk VIII feature.

How about a VC? only need to add the stubs, its already modelled in AH.

Just a thought...

That or an VIII would be sweet.

All you need for an VIII is a retractable tail, and a broad chord rudder, as far as 3d model.
