Mono makes the WORST looking throats, much worse than strep. There isnt a medicine for it, though cortisone type steroids can help shrink the tonsils if they're so big that the the airway's getting squeezed. Time will heal mono.

Strep pyogenes, teh strain that causes strep throat, is essentially fully sensitive to penicillin in the US. Strep pneumoniae, which can cause pneumonia, ear infections, sinusitis -- is getting pretty resisitant.

Depending on...ummm....intimate practices, throat infections can be caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia.

Other causes for sore throat include viral infections (should be over in a week), sinus infections (irritation from drainage), trauma, smoking, and acid reflux. Rarely, lymphoma can show up as a sore throat.

My bet would be on mono with info provided.

Could consider either bloodletting (using leeeches ONLY -- this isnt the dark ages!) ; if further tests were needed consider consulting a professional for interpretation of chicken entrail augery.

But a lot of the older Generations have had their tonsils removed when they didn't need to be removed.

Hang in there kid.. try and take it easy, don't aggravate the condition and communicate strongly with your doctor regarding treatment.

THAT means speak the hell up and ask LOTS of questions. The minute the doc starts treating you like a kid or talking down to you, with all the determinination you can muster explain to him that you feel like crap, the treatments don't work and that you have a right to know what the possibilities are, what the treatment is, what tests they are running and what you, the paitient can do to improve the situation.

Knowledge is power.. and when your sick, that's no exception. You can't fight if you don't know what the enemy is. Demand to know what they know about your condition ASAP. Have him write down or spell for you the mumbo jumbo stattaco of technical terms so you can research for yourself what it all means. Get your parent()s on the team and on track with you.

Medical Practice these days is becoming a guessing game with the medical staff.. don't put up with it. If they don't wanna tell yah what they are doing, you don't want the 'treatment' from those folks.

Unfortunately most folks sit on the examining table like sheep waiting for slaughter and take the utterences of some poindexter that's doing a 9 to 5 shift as the gospel of god.

Kick ass. Get well.

And good luck!
