IP Address tracking, need help
« on: October 20, 2005, 09:53:17 PM »
Is there any simple way, or relatively simple, to be able to track IP addresses from emails I receive on my hotmail account? I've been getting emails from two companies, one in New York and one in Florida, and I have a sneaking suspicion that they're actually one and the same.

I appreciate the assistence.

Hit your properties, then message souce, check the info there.  You can run a "who-is" on the IP address.

Typically, if someone is spamming and trying to avoid prosecution, they will have multiple sources to send from and it won't link back to the same IP.

If it's harrassing in nature, forward the mails to microsoft and they will pursue if there is a threat or something other than you just being irratated.

You can also block the messages from the sender if it is a repeat problem.

Nothing clever here.  Please, move along.

It should have the orginal IP in headers unless it's been through some sort of anonymizer ... it's easy enough to send an e-mail out from "whitehouse.gov", however the IP will be diffrant.

If you have a situation your seriously worried about..... you need to get on the case of the local ISP, they will only keep logs for short amount of time (ISP should pop up from a whois).  In U.S. you have to request that logs are held, otherwise most ISP's erase them quickly.

dnsstuff.com

ROCrats has the right idea...  get the ip from the headers...  resolve ip using the tools at dnsstuff.com

get your arins info..

while samspade is decent its just window dressing for the built in features of the TCP / IP protocol....

then again..  with all the open wi fi networks around; knoppix with a devious intent could war spam you with little or no recourse at tracking them..  especially if they change their network card (mac address) which pro spammers do..

good luck..
