Quick question fighter alt
« on: October 19, 2005, 12:48:45 PM »
Hey guys, what current aircraft in the AH stock is the best performing at 15-25k?
I'd tend to lean towards the spit 14 but I'm sure I'm probably wrong lol
In terms of performing, I mean, speed, climb, etc
Cheers

Over 20k a P-47N is a good match for anything. I love Jugs!

Tempest can be pretty nasty, 400+ mph cruise & climbs 3500 - 4000 fpm up to 17k.

Ta152h gets really good the higher you go, 450mph @ 30k... but speed & 30mm's are the only things going for it. Most people can just dive away and get you to break your wings off.

109g10 is pretty nice, and no perk tag. Gets you up to 20k really quick. Not exactly something I'd try to turn fight in though... at any alt.

51D's get pretty good with alt. the climb doesn't feel too spectacular though.

190D9 is fun.. right until you go past 22k and it starts to suck.

Forget ponyD, the PonyB was made for high alts! The D had an engine geared for lower "medium" alts. The B was meant to be a high alt super hero.

P-51B(V-1650-3) 2nd s/c gear kicks in at around 20k, up to 28k FTH.
P-51D(V-1650-7) 2nd s/c gear goes from 16k, up to 25k FTH.

In the context of the original question the P-51D would be the more suitable choice of Mustang.

Spit IX starts shining at 20K as well ;)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

The other word for alt-fighting is Jug, P-47 still rules the skies up there :)

The Spit XIV's best altitude for speed is about 27,000ft, where it will do 448mph or thereabouts.

Actually P-47D-40 has same speed as D-11, D-25 is a few mph slower.

You know the funny thing about this question? My old Grandad used to fly Hurricanes and then got shifted on to spitfires, he used to tell me about being at 19-21k looking to "bounce" 109s and bombers.
I tried taking a hurricane up there and thought " no way in hell could you last long" Often wonder how he (and others" done it, didn't get much time with him as he passed away when I was a kid, after being in AH I wish I could go back and ask him for advice etc ! He would probably say what he always used to say when starting off on one of his tales "  had me guns set to 100yds, turned on the sight ( or something else that needed switched on) and settle in nice and close behind him"
Cheers Big G
