ATI Radeon 8500 frame rates
« on: October 29, 2005, 09:19:08 PM »
I have a built from pieces 2 ghz p4 with agp 4x. My video card is an ATI 8500 64mb. I have managed to turn the 4x agp slot on and set the ATI software to run the card at 4x and it has improved my frame rates quite a lot. But during this process I "upgraded " my driver to the latest ATI driver and ended up with a black horizon. The driver I was using before seems to be gone from my computer. I have downloaded an older driver from ATI and am able play the game now, howerver I feel that there is still room for improvement. Is there an adjustment/setting for the new driver that will correct the black horizon thing? Does anyone know which ATI driver is the most recent one that does not have the black horizon problem? Are there any general setting that will work better than others with a 4x 64 mb 8500 card?
Any help/advice/info will be appreciated.

4.3,4.7, 4.10 4.12 for windows 98se- xp (4.3's are the recomended drivers for 9200 and below cards) but  the 4.7's work ok too normally .
the 4.10 was the last main supporting driver for the 8500..

the main thing is the 8 series cards are dx8 and they just dont have all the goods for real good game play .  the 9550 256 is about the bottem line id recomend , ,, but then again ive got ah playing on a gf2 card in a old pc.

This is a bug in the newer ATI drivers for older cards.  Stick with the 4.12 Catalyst (do not install the Catalyst Control Center!) and you will not have any troubles with any game.
