Are the 61.77 drivers the best for this card?

no, use the latest ones. 61.77 is for the 5950 and older cards.

6000 series and higher, use the latest drivers.

The 61.77s are listed at an Nvidia help/support page as the best for Win XP, they were developed to address some display issues with Nvidia cards, that is before the GeForce 6600 cards came on the market.
I have a 6600 GT but had to remove it from my system; I need a more pwerful PS which I was not aware of when I bought the card. I am now back to using my old GeForce 5200 card til I can get a PS upgrade.

I was just curious. I installed the latest drivers and it seems to work great.

I am using version 81.85 10/20/05. These added support for the GeForce 6600 cards, according to the release notes from NVIDIA. Haven't played a lot, but so far seems very smooth.
